Personal Trainer

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Wellness Coordinator and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Exercise Specialist is primarily responsible for providing health & wellness services, promoting themselves to potential clients, building rapport with members, and selling their advanced exercise knowledge and abilities. In addition, they deliver excellent membership service by developing, implementing, and promoting fitness and wellness events, seminars, and programs; providing new member assessments, re-assessments, and programs; and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions

  • Takes professional initiative to offer information, promote and sell personal training and additional YMCA health & wellness services & programs, including clinical exercise programs.
  • Provides excellent member service by exceeding member expectations; greet and acknowledge all members to encourage wellness participation.
  • Monitors the wellness center as members use the equipment to ensure their general safety and equipment function; enforces all member codes of conduct, rules and policies including, but not limited to, age restrictions, dress codes, language and proper use of YMCA equipment and facilities.
  • Demonstrates correct stances, posture, alignment and technique during wellness consultation and healthy lifestyles sessions; shows safe, effective ranges of motion and exercise control, demonstrates strength & endurance while maintaining role-model form throughout.
  • Helps to maintain a neat, clean, and pleasant environment on the wellness floor.
  • Integrates the mission of the YMCA and its core values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility, and faith into all aspects of job responsibilities.
  • Understands the prevention, detection, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, basic emergency procedures, and the legal and professional responsibilities of wellness coaches.
  • Assists management with administrative tasks that include keeping accurate records of scheduled, rescheduled, and cancelled appointments.
  • Attends continuing education and mandatory training.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Represents the branch at various meetings related to the position, and all assigned association committees.
  • Supports the annual fundraising campaign and volunteer committees/boards as assigned. Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the community.
  • Flexible work hours to ensure exposure to all facets of department operations and performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, kinesiology, sports medicine, or equivalent preferred.
  • Preferred certifications: Exercise Physiologist, Personal Training, Nutrition, Wellness Coaching, Group Exercise Instructor, etc. from NCCA certified providers.
  • Strong knowledge of current trends in health and wellness and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional relationship management experience and capacity to develop effective working relationships with people from a variety of different ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, and generational backgrounds.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of YMCA and the respective roles of volunteerism and staff.
  • Ability to establish, collaborate and maintain relationships with staff, YMCA members, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
  • Consistently self-driven and goal-oriented with the ability to set effective team and individual goals and take ownership for results.
  • Supports the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:
  • Prior to employment, completion of all Child Abuse Prevention training.
  • Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members, or guests to your supervisor.
  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
  • Within 30 days for employment, completion of all trainings in Redwoods, CPR, First Aid, AED, BBP, and Oxygen Administration.

  • The employee frequently is required to sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust.
