Job Description

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville is seeking an applicant to fill a full-time position as a Pediatric Critical Care Neurointensivist in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) with clinical duties in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. The position will be at a non-tenure accruing level of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor (# 00030309) depending on credentials and will report to the Chief of the Division of PCCM and to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville.

The charge to this faculty member is to provide superior quality clinical care to critically ill pediatric patients with complex neurological illnesses and injuries that may require continuous or intermittent monitoring with advanced technologies including continuous video-EEGs, intracranial pressure catheters, transcranial Doppler, and near-infrared spectroscopy.

The Qualified Candidate Should Possess The Following Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence in providing state-of-the-art critical care to pediatric patients with conditions that require expert neurointensive care
  • Expertise in the understanding and monitoring of primary and secondary neurologic injuries affecting critically ill children (including trauma), with the ability to translate real-time interpretation of monitored physiological parameters into effective clinical interventions
  • Experience in the diagnosis and management of neurosurgical conditions including in the settings of intraoperative and perioperative care
  • A track record of establishing and maintaining close working relationships with multiple disciplines including neurology and neurosurgery that has led to adoption of and adherence to evidence-based and formalized consensus best practices
  • Exemplary clinical, organizational and interpersonal skills and a history of contribution as a collegial, enthusiastic, and “can do” multidisciplinary team member
  • Enthusiasm and excellence with respect to the education of the full range of pediatric trainees (residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other allied health professionals)

The pediatric critical care specialists in the Division provide continuous in-house coverage of the PICU at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and have a strong focus on educating medical students and residents. The successful candidate will possess exemplary clinical, organizational and interpersonal skills; collaborate as an enthusiastic and positive team player.

General Description Of Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide superior, effective and efficient care of critically ill pediatric patients
  • Coordinate the efficient utilization bed space in the pediatric intensive care unit
  • Participate actively in quality improvement initiatives to improve the care of critically ill patients
  • Serve as a resource to all UF COM-Jacksonville programs during the ICU rotation for medical education
  • Participate in monthly department faculty meetings, institutional committees, and administrative functions as assigned. Engage in the teaching of residents, fellows, medical students and allied health professionals

Wolfson Children’s Hospital houses a 26-bed PICU suite (plus 2 burn beds) in a new state-of-the-art Critical Care Tower that is also supported by pediatric neurosurgeons, pediatric neurologists, pediatric trauma specialists, pediatric nephrologists, the full range of other pediatric medical subspecialists and surgical specialists, a team of physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses, registered nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals.

Expected Salary

Salary is based on academic rank and years of experience and is guided by AAMC salary data for academic practices.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess a MD/DO degree, possess or be eligible for a Florida Medical License, and be BE/BC in Pediatric Neurocritical Care Medicine. The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited Neurocritical care fellowship program.
