Part-Time Student Research Assistant

PED-CARDIAC DEV BIOLOGY WELLS (IN-PCDB-IUINA)

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

The VanDusen Lab in the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research is seeking motivated individuals to perform a variety of tasks in support of ongoing research related to cardiac gene regulation. The lab uses cutting-edge technologies from the fields of molecular biology, genetics, and genome editing to generate insights into genetic control of heart development and disease. This will be an excellent opportunity for students in bio/biomedical related fields to learn technical skills and become familiar with routine research lab functions.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assists senior lab members with tasks, as needed.
  • Performs plasmid DNA isolation, PCR, molecular cloning, and cell culture.
  • Cleans and organizes lab and/or equipment.
  • Works independently after training.
  • Learns technical skills related to molecular biology.
  • Learns how an academic lab functions.
  • Learns basics of cardiac developmental biology and gene regulation.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University in a bio/biomedical related degree program.

Preferred

  • Work study eligible.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. May occasionally be required to move objects weighing up to 30 pounds. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus, including different areas within the Wells Center. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Tools and equipment used include standard molecular biology equipment such as thermocyclers, incubators, centrifuges, etc.

Opportunity for full time employment in the summer may be available. The job will begin early in the fall 2024 semester.

Indianapolis, Indiana

$12 per hour.

Approximately 15 hours per week (over the course of 3-5 days).

Hours will be flexible, however, preference may be given to students who are able to work more hours or more days per week.
