Part-time Faculty, Ethnomusicology and Music History

Job Description:

The Core Studies department at Boston Conservatory at Berklee is seeking a specialist in Ethnomusicology to augment the departmental offerings. The primary responsibility of this new, part-time faculty position will be to teach a new, first-year core course for undergraduate music students that balances western classical music in the landscape of many global music traditions and offers an introduction to methodologies and modes of interrogation that are not singularly focused on the western tradition. Additional responsibilities may include teaching additional undergraduate and graduate electives, as well as graduate level writing and research skills courses. Compensation and rank are commensurate with professional experience.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's Degree
  • Minimum 3 years teaching in accredited higher education institution
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to work within a diverse faculty and student body
  • A familiarity with the priorities of undergraduate conservatory education, and the acumen to create and teach an introductory, ethnomusicology-oriented course in the framework of a conservatory curriculum
  • An in-depth knowledge of specific, non-western classical music traditions, while also being able to provide an overview of a broad range of traditions
  • The ability to actively engage students in the learning process, including students who benefit from a variety of learning modalities
  • A strong sense of collegiality, and a willingness to collaborate when appropriate
  • A respect for differing opinions and viewpoints
  • Knowledge of current research and pedagogical trends in ethnomusicology/musicology
  • Experience teaching ELLs


Additionally, candidates should also possess the ability to teach courses at the graduate level, including an introductory writing course, graduate seminars, and/or similar courses.
