Financial Times

Newsroom Fellow

Financial Times New York, NY

Ready to cut your teeth in a working newsroom? FT Specialist US, a division of the Financial Times seeks recent college grads interested in pursuing a career in journalism to join us.

What We’re Offering

This is a full-time fellowship role, with benefits. We seek people eager to chase the news and tell the stories most important to our readers.

No experience in the field? No worries.

We can teach you how to rip through the jargon and get to the heart of a story. All you need is to bring is a desire to dig, openness to learning and interest in pursuing a career in news.

And if you’ve never considered business journalism, that's OK, too! Many of us started the same way but ended up discovering something we never expected and sticking around a while. Let us know what interests you about the field (and what you think might be a challenge).

Who We're Looking For

This is a full-time position for a recent college graduate. We seek aspiring reporters looking to get a start in the industry.

We want people who bring a fresh perspective and eagerness to learn. We aim to bring in people who have a background or perspective that may be underrepresented in our newsroom or audiences.

If you've earned a Master's degree in Journalism, we encourage you to apply for an open reporter role, instead.

When you apply, tell us what got you interested in journalism, and about any experience you've had whether in class or a student paper, internship, etc. Tell us what you hope to learn.

What You’ll Do

FT Specialist fellows rotate through different teams over the one-year, gaining exposure to various beats and editing styles.

Our reporters tell stories in writing, through video and graphics. We break news in our industries and dive deep, so you will develop skills in interviewing, parsing documents, producing hard news and crafting features.

You will work with editors and attend team and company meetings. You’ll get clips, develop sources and see first-hand how newsrooms operate. In addition, you will meet monthly with the editor-in-chief and VP of editorial products for coaching or to discuss career or other questions you might have.

Who We Are

Our 10 titles target decision-makers at financial service companies, corporate directors overseeing businesses you already know, and key decision makers at large companies and organizations. We delve into issues that affect everyday people: saving for retirement, building personal wealth, choosing insurance. We also hold these business leaders accountable by examining whether they do what they say when it comes to fighting climate change, fostering diversity and inclusion and other initiatives addressing environmental, social and governance issues.

We write about the stories behind the businesses we cover, and the people that make these industries tick.

As part of the FT, FT Specialist is well-resourced and belongs to a global network. In line with our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we encourage those with underrepresented perspectives and experiences to apply.

We are a company in growth mode, and frequently have new opportunities open. At the end of fellowship period, we would encourage fellows to apply for any open roles within our family of publications. Some fellows have taken permanent roles after the program, and we look forward to continuing that pipeline!
