Base pay range

$95,000.00/yr - $140,000.00/yr

We’re seeking an experienced news editor for a temporary position at NBC News Digital.


In this position, you will work with our breaking and national news teams to edit coverage of the day’s news.


The breaking news team is the first to respond to major news events no matter where or when they’re happening, covering natural disasters, crime, lawsuits, cultural events, celebrity news, and various major stories on other beats as needed. The national reporters are often tapped to travel on major news and advance storylines from the desk, aiming to produce exclusives and land newsmaking interviews before competitors.


This editor will be comfortable assigning and editing stories on all topics and be able to ideate on angles that produce distinct or exclusive coverage. They will also have experience with live blogs.


You will edit stories and live blogs from both the breaking and national news teams, depending on the needs of the day. Once an initial story is published, you’ll oversee it as it continues to be updated, vetting reporting thoroughly along the way. You’ll make sure that the stories you’re editing have the best photos, videos and other elements to provide context to a reader as a story is developing.


This role will work closely with other editors and senior leaders in the newsroom, and the right candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment.


You will thrive on reacting instantly and responsibly to news, ensuring both speed and accuracy, clarity and fairness. As an NBC News editor, you will be obsessive about keeping NBC News competitive on major news stories and reporting news first, thriving on the challenge as a team player who never loses your cool.


This is a temporary freelance 16-week assignment and can be remote or based in our headquarters in New York.


Other responsibilities:

Actively monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, wires, internal communications) and be prepared to jump on news seconds after it happens.

Write and edit SEO, social and cover headlines.

Edit and write clean, fast and accurate copy, headlines and photo and video captions.

Oversee multiple reporters at once and make sure that each has a clear assignment and is producing a story in a timely fashion as laid out at the time of assignment.

Make full use of the range of NBC News resources, including network newsgathering and multimedia.


Qualifications/Requirements:

4+ years working in a newsroom environment with demonstrated experience assigning, writing and editing news stories.

Flexibility on schedule.

Must desire to work in a creative, demanding and competitive environment.

Must be a skilled editor with outstanding communication skills.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years work experience


Salary range: $95,000 - $140,000
