We are currently seeking a Scientist with the National Institute of Mental Health within the National Institutes of Health in Rockville, MD.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Be responsible for performing independent and cutting-edge research on studies related to the role of thalamocortical circuits in the development of cortical networks and function.
  • Broaden the technical and intellectual capacity supporting the SCCN and develop cutting-edge tools and resources.
  • Support and train lab members, establish and conduct collaborative research, attend and present at national and international meetings, and assist in writing manuscripts.
  • Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.
  • Advance the science in the laboratory through new procedures and discoveries.
  • Design and conduct experiments and studies requiring the application of a broad professional knowledge of scientific theories and principles.
  • Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
  • Independently direct and conduct special research projects that have a high priority for the laboratory with special emphasis in the development of novel research treatments.
  • Work with postdoc/biological scientists to perform statistical analysis for research projects.
  • Experience and capacity to implement techniques such as transcriptomics, optogenetics, and cell/ slice culture are also preferred.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use. Train staff on the proper usage of laboratory instruments and equipment. Work with staff to track division travel, leave and training.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate space and facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.
  • Submit and gain approval of laboratory animal study protocols.
  • Evaluates, analyzes and interprets research data, communicates results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
  • Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts.
  • Coordinates with junior staff to modify research protocols.
  • Coordinate projects being developed in the laboratory, proposing SAR strategies and monitoring their progress.
  • Presents research at national scientific meetings and symposia
  • Prepare oral presentations and posters for internal and external groups/conferences.
  • Co-author manuscripts on research projects; publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Provides interpretation of results, guidance, and scientific support to the management team.
  • Search existing literature for new and/or relevant techniques.
  • Mentors junior level scientists.
  • Provide scientific and technical expertise to all visiting fellows, post-docs, and technicians.


REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in neuroscience or a related discipline and significant postdoctoral experience in at least one of the following fields: biological psychiatry, molecular neuroanatomy, molecular biology, cognitive behavior, nonhuman primate neurobiology, MRI, and electrophysiology.
  • A minimum of two years of experience and capacity to implement techniques such as transcriptomics, optogenetics, and cell/slice culture.
  • Two years of experience and will be responsible for performing independent and cutting-edge research on studies related to the role of thalamocortical circuits in the development of cortical networks and function.
  • Experience with the Animal Handling of Non-human primates.
