Position Summary
The Network Engineer provides network and voice system installation, problem determination, resolution, configuration, and needs analysis to support the use of technology by faculty, staff, and students.
The engineer provides support for all aspects of the various University data center facilities and communications closets; supports operations and administration of voice and data network components, located on all campus locations.; and works with other staff including application development and security.
They will also be responsible for administrative tasks, projects and supporting other IT related functions.
Essential Functions
Network Infrastructure
Responsible for implementing technologies designed by the infrastructure team
Configures network switches, VPN , optical hardware and SDN systems
Researches new technologies in support of data, VoIP, conferencing systems and WiFi
Deploys wireless network infrastructures and makes recommendations on systems enhancements for optimal operation
Recommends IT solutions to business and management problems
Supports the universities building management systems
Works with the Facilities Engineering group on implementing technologies into new or renovated structures
Network Maintenance
Monitors and analyze data to improve system performance
Monitors network usage and security issues.
Deploys patches to mitigate any threat to systems
Responds to issues affecting the network architecture
Supports ticket resolution associated to the network architecture
Supports work and tickets associated to the operation of the firewall
Supervises student workers

Make use of SUMO logic to analyze captured data from disparate network systems
Support security team with data from firewall and network equipment
Use measuring and diagnostic tools to test and adjust networking equipment

Undertakes preventative measures and implementing, maintaining and monitoring network security
Supports real-time video applications
Installs, supports and maintains new switch hardware and software infrastructure
Evolves IT’s performance management program into a strategic talent management program
Monitors network usage and security issues
Recommends IT solutions to business and management problems
Analyses and resolves faults
Works closely with other departments/organizations and collaborates with other IT staff
Provides training and technical support for users with varying levels of IT knowledge and competence

Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree; or in lieu of the degree, a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
