Network Administrator/Technology Specialist

NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR/TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST

The job of Network Administrator is done for the purpose/s of providing System information technology services by developing and maintaining systems which store, manipulate and retrieve information for administrative, instructional and support staff; maintaining computer and network equipment in a safe and functional operating condition; meeting the technology needs of the System; documenting information; and resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates the installation of computer network hardware and software for the purpose of providing access to applications and data residing at local and remote site.
  • Coordinates the repair and maintenance of computer equipment as needed and/or assigned (e.g. servers, routers, switches and hubs, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining safe and efficient operation.
  • Develops hardware, software and procedural solutions for the purpose of solving organizational problems in order to meet System objectives while maintaining appropriate security, and network architecture standards.
  • Develops network applications including analysis, testing and documenting for the purpose of maintaining computerized communications.
  • Evaluates new technologies, hardware and software for the purpose of determining their value to the organization and making recommendations to system administration.
  • Maintains System network and information technology systems (e.g. network security, student information database, system back ups, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the effective and efficient functioning of assigned district information technology systems.
  • Troubleshoots network and operating system problems.
  • Provides technical support to ensure proper upkeep of equipment and network, including maintenance of hardware and local area networks.
  • Troubleshoots wired and wireless systems.
  • Installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network-based printers and copiers.
  • Installation and maintenance of staff, student, and teacher devices.
  • Creates, modifies, and deletes accounts for end users.
  • Provides general technical support for all dial-in/remote access systems.

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge And Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating advanced information technology hardware and software including utilizing pertinent application and operating system software; adhering to safety practices; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: computer hardware and software configurations (including peripherals); TCP/IP protocols; current generation operating systems and networking standards and practices; and network design, implementation and safety regulations.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude; communicating technical information to non-technical audiences; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; adapting to changing work priorities; and developing effective working relationships.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing a department; and monitoring budget expenditures. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the Organization’s services.Working

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 15% walking, and 25% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
