We are hiring a Graduate Legal Assistant in the Natural Resources Law Section. California state agencies manage our air, water, wildlife, forests and other natural resources, and when those agencies need advice or are in court, they turn to the Natural Resources Law Section for legal representation.


Positions may be filled in Sacramento, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Oakland. These positions allows telework. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. California residency is required.


The Natural Resources Law Section advises and represents California state agencies, boards, and commissions with responsibility for natural resources management and pollution control, appearing in important, highly visible actions.


Graduate Legal Assistants (GLAs) who are part of the Natural Resources Law Section, work as part of a dynamic legal team committed to public service. Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, GLAs will have the opportunity to work on substantive legal matters of public interest and importance. They conduct legal and other research and assist in preparing a variety of legal documents, including briefs, memoranda and legislative analyses, often under tight deadlines, for client agencies or the Attorney General and other constitutional officers.


This position will emphasize handling litigation related to wildfires, however, the incumbent will have the opportunity to perform other work as described in the preceding paragraph.


*Graduate Legal Assistant positions are designed for students who have graduated from law school and are awaiting results of the California Bar or planning on taking the California Bar within the next few months. The GLA position is a 12-month limited term position. Promotion to a permanent DAG position is dependent upon passing the California State Bar and successful work performance.*


Desirable Qualifications include:

  • Interest in public service and motivated to work on environmental matters
  • A strong academic record at an accredited law school
  • Journal, moot court, and/or mock trial experience
  • Excellent writing skills


Required Qualifications:

  • Eligible to take the California State Bar (or persons in their last year of law school)


Monthly Salary:

  • $5,075.00 - $6,085.00
