GENERAL SUMMARY:

The National Security Policy Analyst position is located in Washington, D.C. The incumbent is responsible for collecting information and analyzing issues related to national defense and foreign relations policies and programs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Conduct research and analysis on issues relating to the national security of the United States of America in support of The American Legion’s congressional testimony, statements for the record, position papers, and its overall effort to advise and influence Congress.

  1. Coordinate and execute site visits at Department of Defense (DoD) bases to evaluate military quality of life and best practices as part of The American Legion’s program. Write reports based on data and information collected.
  2. Participate in working groups and develop relationships with DoD, State and Homeland Security, other Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) and community partners.
  3. Provide support to National Security Commission, National Security Commission Liaison Committee, Aerospace Committee, Conventional Armed Forces Committee, Foreign Relations Committee, Law and Order & Homeland Security Committee, Military Benefits & Quality of Life Committee, National Guard & Reserve Forces Committee, Unconventional Forces & Intelligence Committee, and National Security Council.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP (reports directly to): Director of National Security

MINIMUM SKILLS REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Education/Technical Knowledge:

College education – four year degree to provide basic familiarity with a variety of subjects.



Additional Skills Needed:

Have knowledge of global relations, geography, political-military-diplomatic history, government regimes, economics, treaties and sanctions.

Communicate effectively verbally in a diverse range of settings and audiences.

Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills.

Capable of interpreting legal documents and government regulations.

Strong organizational, project, time management, and problem solving skills.

Able to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.

Experience with military and veterans protocol, culture and language.

Knowledge of The American Legion organizational structure, programs, services and policies.

Must have good computer skills to include MS Office Suite.
