Given the growing awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness, and increasing demands for services for those with mental illness and their families, NAMI-Delaware is at a pivotal moment in its 40-year history. With a desire to do more and serve more, alongside a period of rapid change and complexity, NAMI-Delaware seeks an experienced nonprofit executive to lead the organization through a period of reflection, planning and strategic change.

Overview

For more than 40 years, NAMI-Delaware has supported individuals with mental illness and their families through peer support, education, advocacy, and access to affordable house. Our mission is to support, educate and advocate until there is a cure for severe and persistent mental illness. NAMI-Delaware is one of 49 State Organizations that comprise the National Alliance on Mental Illness. These State Organizations support the work of more than 600 Affiliate organizations or groups.

NAMI-Delaware is a state-wide organization with offices in Wilmington and Georgetown and has affiliated groups in Kent and Sussex counties. Its education and training programs are offered by staff and volunteers throughout the state in partnership with schools, religious groups, state and local police, services providers, and others. NAMI-Delaware also owns and functions as Landlord to almost 80 single family homes or apartments that serve approximately 300 individuals. Our housing program is funded with both federal and state dollars.

The CEO

  • Provides both strategic and operational leadership, working in partnership with the board and staff in developing strategic priorities, goals and objectives.
  • Ensures the effective and efficient implementation of strategic initiatives and delivery of programs and services.
  • Serves as the organization's chief development officer in soliciting philanthropic gifts/funding.
  • Works closely with staff to build a culture of shared purpose, trust and mutual accountability
  • Represents the organization and its mission to various and multiple constituencies including community members, government agencies, donors, business leaders, and partners.

Qualifications

  • Experience in working with diverse and/or vulnerable populations
  • Experience in working with or for a nonprofit board of directors
  • Prior experience in leading an organization or a large division/department
  • Experience in leading a process of organizational change
  • Strong skills in strategic analysis and planning
  • Experience in managing HR systems, developing staff and employee teams
  • Experience in managing multiple revenue streams and restricted funds
  • Experience in public policy, advocacy, contract negotiations
  • Experience in generating philanthropic revenues, particularly in major donor development and managing development staff
  • An engaging personality with experience building relationships, i.e., comfortable meeting new people, networking, speaking in front of groups
  • Skills in collaborative decision-making
  • High emotional intelligence
  • An appreciation for the distinctive aspects of the Delaware service landscape
  • Education and experience that demonstrates competent leadership and management skills.

Optimal

  • Familiarity with affordable housing and property management
  • Experience in providing services to those with mental illness
  • Experience in trauma-informed services and programs
  • Experience working in Delaware
