A musical choreographer is a professional who designs and directs the dance and movement sequences in musical theatre, film, television, and other performance settings. Their work involves creating dance routines that complement the musical score and enhance the storytelling of the production.
Position Duties
Collaborates with the director and other creative team members to develop the overall vision for the musical numbers, ensuring that the choreography aligns with the narrative and emotional tone of the piece.
Create original dance sequences, which may involve a variety of dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, contemporary, and others, depending on the requirements of the production.
Participates in the casting process to select dancers who can execute their vision. They also coach and rehearse with the cast to refine their performances and ensure precision and cohesion in the dance numbers.
Teach the choreography to the performers and conduct rehearsals to refine the dance numbers. This involves breaking down complex movements into teachable steps and ensuring that all performers are synchronized.
