Museum Educator (Full-Time)

POSITION: Museum Educator (Full-Time)

ROLE & LEVEL/GRADE: P1/3

DEPARTMENT: Education

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Science Education Manager

SUMMARY: The Museum Educator will work under the supervision of the Science Education Manager to deliver and assist with the development of educational programming to visiting school groups as well as youth programming through camps and classes. These will be either facilitated classroom-based experiences in the sciences or hands-on learning stations located throughout the different museum exhibitions. Programs will cover all areas of science, including health and wellness, marine science, astronomy, chemistry, physics, engineering, and computer science.

SALARY: $18 per hour with Full benefits

ESSENTIAL Duties And Responsibilities

  • Adhere to the established policies and procedures of the Museum.
  • Deepens the experience of visiting school children by facilitating classroom-based, inquiry investigations to enhance a visit to the Museum’s exhibitions.
  • Supports delivery and development of youth programs such as camps, classes and workshops.
  • Supports an enhanced experience for school children and other visitors by delivering and assisting with the development of informal interpretive programs at different places within the Museum’s exhibitions utilizing science materials and specimens.
  • Adheres to daily program schedules and other rotational tasks as assigned.
  • Works with other staff, interns and volunteers to deliver programs to a diverse audience during special events or other specialized program needs.

  • Maintains excellent customer service by maintaining a positive and friendly attitude and through guest interactions by answering questions related to exhibit content, show times, directions, and other general information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Education, Museum Studies, Science or other related degree, either completed or in progress.
  • Background and/or strong interest in several scientific areas, in particular, robotics, computer science and engineering.

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Experience working with children, youth and/or families in a museum or other informal learning environment.
  • Can demonstrate strong educational skills and have a demonstrated commitment to delivering scripted learning experiences.
  • Can effectively manage groups of students in a positive manner while keeping learning and enjoyment at the focus of the experience.
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Can follow the Museum's mission statement, goals, and policies as per employee manual.
  • Can work in a fast-paced environment with creativity, curiosity, integrity and determination.
  • Can demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively share information across and between multiple disciplines and reach audiences with varied technical and organizational knowledge.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those as employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work time will be split between working in an open office setting and, on the floor delivering programs. Occasional exposure to outdoor activities may be requested. Weekend and evening work in alignment with programs is sometimes required.

Clearance Requirements

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by the Florida Statutes/law.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
