Minimum Qualifications

All applicants must meet the education and/or experience requirements as stated on this exam bulletin to be accepted to the examination.

Unless otherwise stated in the Minimum Qualifications, qualifying experience may be combined on a proportionate basis if the requirements stated below include more than one pattern and are distinguished as "Either" 1, "or" 2, "or" 3, etc. For example, applicants possessing qualifying experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 1 and additional experience amounting to 50% of the required time of Pattern 2 may be accepted to an examination as meeting 100% of the overall experience requirement.

I

One year of experience performing the duties of a Museum Curator I in California state service.

Or II

Two years of professional experience in museum work, at least one of which must be at the level and responsibility of a Museum Curator I. This experience must include responsibility for managing programs, budgeting, and personnel.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in museum studies, history, anthropology, archeology, art, or natural sciences. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education, with two years of experience being equivalent to one year of college for up to two years.)


Position Description


00102872 - MUSEUM CURATOR II

Under general direction, incumbents plan, organize, and manage programs of acquisition, conservation, registration, interpretation, and/or storage of museum objects at museum facilities with moderate sized, active collections.

Willingness to travel throughout the State and work irregular hours.

A graduate degree in museum studies with a concentration in museum studies, fine arts, or a related field.

A final score of 70% must be attained to be placed on the eligible list.

In addition to evaluating the applicant's relative knowledge, skill and ability as demonstrated by quality and breadth of education/experience, emphasis in each test component will be on measuring competitively, relative to job demands, each applicant's:

Knowledge of:

  1. Interpretive collections record-keeping methods
  2. Special techniques for artifact maintenance, preservation, restoration, storage, packaging, and shipping
  3. Familiarization with the properties of cultural and natural objects including fine art, antiques, relics, woods, stone, textile materials, metals, and natural history specimens
  4. Methods of identifying and classifying objects with cultural or natural history significance
  5. California history
  6. Principles of museum administration and exhibit practices
  7. Purposes, cultural and natural features, and values of the California State Park System
  8. Principles of personnel management and supervision
  9. Administrative and budgeting practices
  10. The department's Affirmative Action Program
  11. A manager's role in the Affirmative Action Program and the processes available to meet affirmative action objectives

Ability to:

  1. Implement a registration and control system for collections coordination
  2. Conduct research to determine historic and interpretive data
  3. Evaluate objects for their appropriateness to remain in or be added to the collection
  4. Inspect and recommend necessary maintenance, preservation, restoration, storage, display, safety, and handling methods
  5. Plan and conduct training programs in museum collections procedures
  6. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals, organizations, and other agencies contacted in the course of the work
  7. Effectively contribute to the department's affirmative action objectives


Eligible List Information

A Departmental Open eligible list for the MUSEUM CURATOR II Classification will be established for:

  • Department of Parks & Recreation

The names of successful competitors will be merged onto the eligible list(s) in order of final score regardless of test date. Eligibility expires 12 months after it is established. Applicants must then retake the examination to reestablish eligibility.

Resulting Eligibility List(s) will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of California.

Veterans' Preference will be granted for this examination.
