Model Maker
HP’s Home Printer Hardware R&D Development Organization is seeking a skilled Model Shop Model Maker for our Vancouver, WA facility, a role that thrives in a dynamic R&D environment. The position involves manual machining, CNC, 3D printing, injection molding, wire EDM, and plastic mold design. The Model Maker will use 2D and 3D CAD for precise material cutting and shaping, manage equipment installation, maintenance, and repair for optimal functionality, and operate a variety of material fabrication machinery. This role includes collaborating with engineers and model makers for efficient job planning and execution, and innovating tooling solutions. A continuous monitoring system for maintenance is also a key responsibility, along with mentoring peers. The candidate must have a deep understanding of model making skills, company policies, and procedures to independently complete complex tasks with creativity and initiative, often without pre-established guidelines.

- Designing and fabricating molds, tools, dies, fixtures, and parts for R&D and experimental product development.
- Collaborating creatively with partners to tackle complex technical challenges in machining and manufacturing.
- Providing technical consultation and support for innovative solutions and processes concerning concept, functionality, quality, reliability, and safety.
- Fabricating and repairing plastic and metal parts using manual and CNC milling.
- Utilizing various shop tools such as mills, lathes, grinders, wire EDM.
- Creating custom sheet metal dies and forming.
- Operating and managing 3D printing technologies.
- Preferred formal Mold, Model or Tool Maker apprenticeship experience plus demonstrated technical competence.
- Or an Associate of Arts or equivalent degree in Machine Tool Technology plus 5 years’ experience or demonstrated significant experience in model or tool making.
- Demonstrated ability to skillfully apply machine tool technology, related shop math and CAD-CAM.
- Experience in reading engineering drawings, CAD, and GD&T, along with familiarity with CAD software, machine shop measuring tools and a basic understanding of G code.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating good judgment, decision-making, and adaptability to R&D’s dynamic needs.
- Background in a mechanical field or relevant education, with welding experience and a strong grasp of machine tool technology theory.
- Knowledge of working with various materials, including metals and plastics, and closely collaborating with engineering teams to address mechanical design challenges.
- Capability to provide technical consultation, offer cost-effective design alternatives, and recommend suitable materials for parts and applications.
