Middle School Dean of Students - The Stony Brook School
The Stony Brook School, a distinguished independent, faith-based boarding school, seeks a 10-month, full-time Middle School Dean of Students to join our dynamic and collaborative team. This position will begin on July 1st, 2024.
The Middle School Dean of Students, reporting to the Assistant Head of School, is tasked with overseeing and enriching the academic program and culture of the Middle School. The Middle School Dean of Students will proactively work with faculty, staff, students, and employees to champion the growth of the Middle School program . They will also develop meaningful relationships with students to create an environment where they can thrive, while skillfully addressing behavioral and academic challenges through a restorative manner. The Middle School Dean of Students will teach two sections of classes and actively contribute to SBS co- curricular, advisory, and residential life programming.

The Ideal Applicant Will Possess
- A profound alignment with our school's Christian mission, including a desire to mentor students and challenge them to understand themselves in light of Christian teachings
- 3-5 years of experience working with Middle School students
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents, teachers, and staff
- Displaying a high level of emotional intelligence along with a collaborative and empathetic demeanor.
- Sensitivity and attentiveness to the needs of Middle School students and parents, particularly within the unique context of a boarding school environment
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that respects diversity and promotes unity and belonging among students and staff
- Strong decision-making skills, capable of making well- informed judgments that prioritize the best interests of students and the school community
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends when required by the role.
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree (or higher) preferred.
Academic
- Supervise student academic progress to align with school standards and objectives, while providing guidance to students and families during course registration.
- Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement curriculum enhancements and interventions for struggling students
- Organize and lead routine middle school teacher meetings, prioritizing faculty professional development in student engagement, classroom management, and effective teaching strategies
- Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that supports students' emotional and social development
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee student activities and events fostering a vibrant school community, with a focus on mid day activities (lunch, chapel, recess, and assembly)
- Address student behavioral issues, implementing restorative practices and disciplinary measures as necessary
- Serve as a liaison between students, parents, and teachers, facilitating communication and conflict resolution.
- Partake in weekend rotations approximately once every five weeks, potentially acting as an Administrator on Call
- Coordinate the evening programming for middle school boarding students
- Assist in the development and enforcement of school policies and procedures
- Participate in the admissions process, including interviewing prospective students and their families
- Manage the Middle School budget, allocating resources for events, clubs, and activities
- Compile and analyze data on student achievement and behavior to inform school improvement plans
