Qualifications

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:
To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you must have one of the following:
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
Microbiologist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences (organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent); OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
Chemist: You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described coursework.

Except in special circumstances, those new to the federal government will be hired at the starting salary (step 1) of the applicable grade range listed in the Overview section.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Research GS-12 level, you must have one of the following:
- 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting microbiological and biochemical research; performing reviews and preparing reports and/or program documents; leading and training researchers, evaluating data and communicating results.
- Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; the education must be directly related and provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position
- equivalent combination of education and experience
Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:
- Knowledge of microbiological and biochemical processes that govern the transformation of chemical stressors in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
- Skill in interpreting scientific data.
- Ability to lead a team of researchers.
- Skill in developing and delivering training.
- Skill in interpreting scientific data.
- Skill in written communication.
- Skill in oral communication.
- Ability to manage contracts including preparing procurement requests and monitoring technical performance.
