MENTAL HEALTH PATIENT SITTER

Summary/Objective:

We’re looking for a flexible, dependable, empathetic individual with a passion for seniors to serve as a Mental Health Patient Sitter. The ideal candidate should have excellent communication skills, a flexible schedule, and a desire to work with seniors. In this role, you will provide constant direct observation of geriatric patients who may be at risk for adverse events such as falls, self-injury, or harm to others, maintaining an orderly environment in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. This person functions under the supervision and direction of the Registered Nurse, License Practical Nurse and Director of Nursing to assist in providing patient safety at Brightwell Behavioral, within scope of service. The role of Mental Health Patient Sitter pays up to $14 an hour based on experience.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for specific aspects of direct patient care and monitoring focused on safety.
  • Uses appropriate distraction tactics when applicable ( i.e. conversation, walking, games)
  • Passes and collects meal trays as needed; passes and assists patients in obtaining nourishment between meals.
  • Frequent physical redirection of patient
  • As directed by Registered Nurse, assists patients walking, crutch walking, and with walker. Assists patients up to chair.
  • Immediately communicate significant information to the Registered Nurse such as changes in the patient’s behavior or condition.
  • Remains alert, calm, and professional, always staying in constant view of the patient.
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate competency skills and knowledge, ability to perform skills specific to patient population identified in unit specific skill list.
  • Responsible for knowing the lifting requirements of the job and requesting assistance when appropriate.
  • Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality. Assures protection and privacy of health information as attained through written, electronic or oral disclosures.
  • Displays concern and initiative. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies.
  • Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
  • Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
  • Seeks guidance and remains knowledgeable of, and complies with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital polices that apply to assigned duties.
  • Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
