Mental Health Officer - Corrections (Early Shift)

VHS is looking for 20 Mental Health Officers - Corrections in the Oklahoma City Area!

  • 40 hrs per week
  • Minimum 1 year contract commitment with option to renew an additional year
  • Rates: $26.50-28.50/hr based on shift

The Scope Of Work/Job Description

Pre-employment Requirements Minimum Qualifications Required •

Must be 18 years of age •

A high school diploma or equivalent •

Must have a valid driver’s license •

Complete/pass a background check and drug screening •

No felony conviction •

Ability to work in a loud and sometimes chaotic environment •

Available to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, or other special shifts •

Stand or sit for extended periods •

Lift, squat, bend, and climb stairs Additional Requirements: •

Medical Marijuana is prohibited, regardless if employee is prescribed/possesses a card authorizing use •

Confidentiality: VHS employees shall not share, disclose, publish, or communicate information, material or documents (information) with persons outside of the Oklahoma County Detention Center who are not authorized to have said information. Information includes, but is not limited to, details of the facility, policies, processes, procedures, facility conditions, information regarding security, altercations (of any kind), medical status of inmate(s), death, illness, drug use, etc.…. Posting any unauthorized information on any social media platform is strictly prohibited.

VHS will conduct VHS standard background and drug screening on each employee prior to assignment.

Oklahoma County Detention Center will conduct a second background and drug screening as per state policy.

•

Each VHS employee must also pass a state approved physical examination, drug screening, and Tuberculosis screening prior to assignment.

Employees will report to a McBride Orthopedic Hospital Clinic location (listed below) for examination and Tuberculosis screening.

VHS will assist in scheduling.

400 N Bryant Ave, Edmond, OK 73034 Training Every VHS employee will report to the facility at 8:00 am on the designated start day and complete the initial 1-day training required for psych checks.

Subsequently, all VHS employees will complete up to 3 additional days of on-site training.

These trainings will be scheduled by Oklahoma County Detention Center staff.

Schedule •

Full-time •

Shift and schedule The position involves working 8-hour shifts, 5 days a week.

Early shift / 6 am to 2 pm (All employees on this shift must attend 6:00 am “Line Up Briefing”) ?

Day shift / 2 pm to 10 pm (All employees on this shift must attend 6:00 pm “Line Up Briefing”) ?

Night Shift / 10 pm to 6 am ?

Overtime available and extra shifts available.

Initially, the opportunity for overtime/extra shifts is limited only by the 18-hour daily maximum. ?

Specialty schedules are available: 12-hour shifts, 4 days per week

Facility operates 7 day per week / 365 days per year. ?

Overtime rate is 1.5x

Holiday rate is 1.5x

  • Mental Health Officer-Psych Checks

VHS employees will have minimal contact with residents/inmates. The main function for this employee is to make rounds and obtain proof of life and safety.

This entails looking into each cell and ensuring the occupant(s) aren’t in danger or endangering themselves.

Frequency of these checks vary: •

1-hour checks-each inmate will be observed every hour on floors 2, 4, 6, 8, and

  • These units have recreation time every day for 3 hours.

During this time inmates are free to move about the pod unrestrained.

When VHS employees are required to conducted psych checks in these pods, VHS employees will notify the unit manger so that he/she is escorted by a certified officer.

If no officer is available, VHS employee will not enter the unit/pod until an escort is available.

30-minute checks are to be conducted on inmates on floors 12 and

  • These are lockdown units whereby inmates are considered high risk and/or are in administrative or disciplinary segregation. Inmates on floors 12 and 13 are allowed 1 hour recreation time 4 times per week in secured areas.

Only one inmate at a time will be in the secured recreation area or the shower area.

All inmate movements in these units are only carried out once the inmate is handcuffed through a secure boundary (cell door or gate).

15-minute checks are to be conducted on inmates deemed a danger to themselves and/or placed on suicide watch.

These inmates are primarily housed on floor

  • Inmates on floors 12 and 13 are allowed 1 hour recreation time 4 times per week in secured areas.

Only one inmate at a time will be in the secured recreation area or the shower area.

All inmate movements in these units are only carried out once the inmate is handcuffed through a secure boundary (cell door or gate). Depending on staff count, VHS employees may be required to conduct observations continuously.

Breaks will be coordinated with unit managers and/or supervisors stationed in each unit/pod. When assigned checks are successfully completed before the next checks are required, VHS employees will complete reports and/or paperwork if applicable.

There isn’t a list of required reports to complete.

Reports will be requested by permanent jail staff/management when a VHS employee witnesses an event that needs to be reported.

Supervisors/managers will assist VHS employees with reports.

  • Housing Monitor

In this role, VHS employee will be assigned an area to monitor.

Activities include line of sight observation and/or observing inmates via video.

VHS employee will notify jail staff of incidents/events requiring staff attention.

Such events will be communicated in training provided by Oklahoma County Detention Center. NO VHS employee will be assigned to or expected to participate in any emergency role such as, riot control, show of force, physical discipline, crisis intervention, shake downs, inmate or cell searches, security role, etc.…

Equipment VHS employees will carry a handheld device like a smart phone.

This device is used to scan QR codes that electronically record progress of checks throughout the facility.

Some units/pods/areas have a QR code on each cell.

Other units/pods/areas have a single QR code that will be scanned prior to beginning and after the checks in that area are conducted.

VHS employees will carry a radio that is used to maintain communication with Control, communicate with and update fellow staff, request an escort, report incidents, stay informed of activities in other areas of the facility, etc.…

Oklahoma County Detention Center will provide radios NO WEAPONS OF ANY KIND WILL BE ASSIGNED TO OR CARRIED BY ANY VHS EMPLOYEE.

Uniforms VHS employees will report to the facility in fatigue pants and shirts provided by Oklahoma County Detention Center.

Each VHS employee must provide his/her own footgear that meet facility standards.

Either of the following are acceptable: •

All black tactical boots •

All black tennis shoes VHS employees will report to the facility with any and all credentials required and/or provided by Oklahoma County Detention Center. Personal communication CELL PHONES ARE PROHIBITED IN SECURE AREAS.

Secured areas are identified as areas by which personnel pass through security doors painted red.

Personal cell phones can be stored in a designated area of the facility.

If a VHS employee must call outside the facility, he/she must coordinate with a supervisor in order to travel to an unsecured area of the facility.

While on duty, VHS employees can be reached by someone outside the facility by calling the facility main line.

The VHS employee will be notified via radio if/when this occurs.
