The Medical Writer is responsible for creating communications materials including but not limited to literature reviews, conference abstracts, conference posters, manuscripts, plain language summaries, white papers, and blogs.


Additionally, this team member will serve as a consultant to KJT’s in-house research teams and external client partners by advising on best practices and gold standard processes to socialize research results across a variety of venues and forums. 


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical Writer is engaged with all aspects of client interactions from initial proposal creation through delivery of all items commissioned by our clients. The duties listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Other duties and projects may also be assigned. Key Responsibilities 

Client Management

  • Engages in active listening with clients to ensure a clear understanding of their business objectives. 
  • Contributes to and facilitates thought-provoking, consultative discussions regarding medical and scientific communications and publications planning objectives, and tactical project scope, communicating clearly with all stakeholders.
  • Independently anticipates, identifies, and mitigates client/project risks and challenges, taking personal ownership for respectfully and expeditiously addressing or escalating issues.  
  • Ensures client requirements are clearly understood, feasible and delivered in the most efficient and effective way in accord with deadlines.  

Medical Writing & Analysis 

  • Reviews study data and existing literature and synthesizes results into thorough and well-written deliverables including but not limited to manuscripts, abstracts, podium presentations, publication extenders, and posters.
  • Creates visually appealing, relevant, effective tables and figures to communicate results clearly and concisely for manuscripts, abstracts, and scientific presentations.
  • Conducts literature searches utilizing various sources (e.g., journal subscriptions, academic libraries, and literature search databases) to compile a thorough appropriate bibliography of medical literature related to client objectives and information needs. 
  • Is experienced in reviewing and disseminating primary research results to communicate findings from studies involving real-world evidence, patient-reported outcomes, and health economic and outcomes research source information. 
  • Displays working knowledge of good publication practices.
  • Reviews, edits, and ensures accuracy and quality of all deliverables. 
  • Works with internal team in a respectful and productive manner.

Consultation

  • Engages and manages non-client authors to participate in deliverable development, including but not limited to reconciliation of input, addressing author input, and communication with authors to ensure inclusion, transparency, and maintenance of compliance standards.
  • Guides clients in adherence with best practices to publicly release research results.
  • Provides expert guidance to clients and author teams related to communication flow and content. 
  • Delivers recommendations on appropriate conferences and journals for clients to submit abstracts, posters, and manuscripts in support of their stated objectives. 
  • Provides input in creating and maintaining processes and procedures for publication planning. 
  • Proactively communicates with KJT team and clients to ensure clear agreement and understanding of project objectives, requirements, deliverables and executes these in accordance with client deadlines. 

Compliance and Commitment to Continuous Improvement

  • Collaborates with other members of the Medical/Scientific Communications team to identify, develop, and maintain best practices and ensure adoption across projects. 
  • Abides by established processes and documentation requirements as determined by KJT and defined by each client, for each project. 
  • Assesses department processes and identifies opportunities to gain efficiency. 
  • Identifies when permissions need to be obtained for reproducing copyrighted material and work with appropriate program staff to obtain them. 
  • Follows governmental regulations and company SOPs for document preparation.

Information Security Management

At all times, the person in this role is responsible for complying with the KJT Group Information Security Policy and all other policies, processes and documentation which relates to information security within KJT Group.

Requirements

  

Key Competencies for Success:

  • Proven medical writing skills (particularly experience with developing scientific peer reviewed publications, abstracts, and conference posters)
  • Understanding of drug development, clinical research, study designs, biostatistics, pharmacology, and medical terminology.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks to meet a range of deadlines. 
  • Professional integrity with an uncompromised orientation toward collaboration and leadership 
  • Technologically astute with a strong aptitude for learning new platforms. 
  • Fluent in English

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree or PhD/MPH in Life Sciences, PharmD, MD or similar field of study 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with the following:
  • Medical communications/publication writing experience in an agency setting.
  • Leading medical writing projects independently, interfacing with clients, stakeholders, key opinion leaders, and authors.
  • Analyzing and synthesizing information obtained through primary research and secondary research into cohesive written communication deliverables. 
  • Working on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, client centric environment. 
  • Preferred 
  • Evidence of medical writing career development desirable (e.g., AMWA certification, DIA training, CMPP certification) 
  • Experience with communicating real-world evidence results and or health economics and outcomes primary research.

Computer Skills: 

  • Microsoft Office with specific strength in Word, Excel, and Outlook 
  • Experience working with Adobe Acrobat (creating and editing PDF files) and document review systems. 
  • Experience with reference management software (e.g., EndNote) and editing software (e.g., PerfectIT) 

Travel Expectations 

This is a remote role that may involve travel up to 15% of the time.
