Hiring Range: $61,000.00- $69,000.00 annually (salary to be commensurate with qualifications)

This is an in-person position and is not eligible for remote work. This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs microbiological tests to identify organisms and viruses. Performs drug and alcohol testing for the Pretrial Services Program.
  • Maintains proficiency in testing for select agents of bioterrorism following CDC protocols for BSL II and III laboratories. Performs Nucleic Acid Amplification procedures, RT-PCR, and DFA when appropriate.
  • Performs tests in serology and immunology.
  • Performs drinking water potability testing following the Manual for Certification of Laboratories Analyzing Drinking Water methods for bacteriological and inorganic anions. Maintains inventory and orders water testing supplies. Responsible for quality control testing of the water test procedures.
  • Calibrates and maintains instrumentation as protocols require following a strict maintenance schedule.
  • Receives, processes, and maintains clinical and environmental specimens and records.
  • Reviews client information and test results and maintains confidentiality.
  • Receives incoming calls and answers client questions appropriately or refers to the proper resource.
  • Coordinates quality control and quality assurance on a daily basis according to laboratory-established protocol.
  • Performs proficiency testing as required for moderate and high complexity tests.
  • Utilizes various computer software to enter data pertaining to quality control, compliance, proficiency, and validation.
  • Utilizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Health Record software interface.
  • Reviews procedure manuals and recommends edits when appropriate.
  • Functions as a phlebotomist.
  • May engage in special programs, projects, and research in the Laboratory.
  • May assume Laboratory Program Manager duties in their absence, as assigned.
  • Assists with specimen receipt, payment transactions, accounts receivable, Radon Measurements Lab transactions, and patient registration as required.
  • Participates in departmental emergency planning and response activities.
  • Promotes public health within the community.
  • Takes personal responsibility to provide exceptional customer service in order to promote and maintain a positive Public Health image, constructive working environment and foster pride and professionalism in the workplace and community.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority; however, may be required to provide expertise or limited guidance or direction to employees, such as overseeing work quality, training, and guidance. Typically serves as a subject matter expert on the scope of functional area.

Supervision Received: Receives general supervision. This classification typically performs job duties by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor may be expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of agency policies and procedures.
  • General knowledge of CLIA and CAP rules and regulations.
  • Skill in demonstrating a cooperative, professional attitude to cultivate relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing multiple tasks and the ability to complete projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to draw patient blood samples with proper phlebotomy techniques.
  • Ability to use computer and laboratory analytical equipment.
  • Ability to communicate, motivate, and organize projects among a broad spectrum of personnel, frequently under deadline pressure. Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to respond in a flexible manner and reprioritize work as situations change.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in medical technology, biology, or related field.
    • Four years of related professional experience may substitute for the degree requirement.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Valid CPR Certification.


Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, and drug screen.


Work Conditions

Duties are primarily performed in an office and laboratory environment; some travel may be required. Work environment may include potential exposure to infections, blood, and contagious diseases. Public Health employees are responsible for providing proof of vaccinations and/or tuberculosis testing as applicable to the specific position and must provide proof of completion of required vaccinations/testing or proof of initiation within sixty days of hire date.
