OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE:
A Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant serves patients by identifying the best method for collecting specimens;accurately ordering and preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing other laboratory testing procedures as per training.
JOB SUMMARY:
Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with order; bringing discrepancies to the attention of laboratory or clinic personnel.
Verifies patient by comparison of verbal and written patient identification.
Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures. Collects other specimens as required
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique and following laboratory procedures.
Tracks collected specimens by documenting initials, date and time of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
Maintains quality results by following department procedures; recording quality control results; identifying and reporting problems as they occur.
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing personnel, mid-levels or laboratory personnel; refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
Serves and protects the office community by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements.
Enhances department reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma or GED
2 years experience drawing blood preferred
Other laboratory testing experience a plus (waived and/or non-waived testing)
Demonstrated computer skills including excellent keyboarding skills
Understand the ethics of confidentiality and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Ability to communicate well with physicians, staff and patients
Employee shall exhibit tact & diplomacy at all times
Maintain a positive and professional attitude in all aspects of work from patient care to interaction with co-workers and physicians
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Email, Allscripts, and EMR system
Valid drivers’ license and reliable transportation to allow individual to provide support to offsite locations as necessary
Clear criminal history
Enjoys a fast paced, challenging, changing environment; possesses the energy and commitment to helping the organization move forward

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Work Schedule is Monday- Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with a one-hour lunch. Slight modifications may be made to this schedule with approval from the Lab Manager
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The noise level is usually quiet.
The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel or crouch and requires full range of body motion, manual and dexterity and eye-hand coordination
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee is expected to use the appropriate tools provided such as hand carts to carry heavier loads.
This position requires eyesight (corrected or uncorrected) that allows the employee to accurately read job related materials, accurately read and record patient related information, and any other functions that require the employee to accurately see data
High risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens and OPIM
Must be able to work overtime hours as needed to accomplish the mission of the organization
