We are seeking a detail-oriented professional responsible for accurately assigning Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, modifiers, and quantities based on medical record documentation. This role primarily supports outpatient encounters and includes educating MTF staff on coding matters while actively contributing to coding compliance activities.
Education/Certification
Candidates should hold one of the following certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist - Physician) with relevant experience.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of three years of recent experience in an outpatient setting (physician's office or ambulatory surgery centers), within the last five years. This experience should include proficiently assigning E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across various specialties such as Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, and OB/GYN. Experience in ancillary specialties (e.g., PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition) that typically do not use E&M codes does not qualify. Experience limited to coding for specific payer requirements in the business office (e.g., insurance billing, accounts receivable) is also not qualifying. Military medical facility experience in outpatient/ambulatory surgery coding for at least two years may be considered.

Excellent computer skills and proficiency in communication are essential.
Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior coding experience within an MTF (Military Treatment Facility).
Familiarity with MHS Genesis is advantageous.
Additional Requirements
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or documented exception.
Security clearance (US citizenship required) must be obtained prior to starting the position.
