The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering roles are core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services; designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Mechanical Engineer within our Equipment Hardware Team, you will be developing custom manufacturing equipment for see-through augmented reality displays. You will collaborate with a high-performing team of many disciplines and be encouraged to think creatively to solve mechanical and system-level problems. This team supports eyepiece display development from early prototypes through the delivery of high-volume manufacturing equipment. This team is also involved with many different manufacturing processes found in optics, precision engineering, and semiconductor industries. The design tasks may involve subassembly designs, equipment upgrades, or layout work for large, complicated pieces of equipment. The work will be a good mixture of desk work as well as hands-on building and experimentation.

This role requires you to be onsite in Austin, TX.

What You’ll Do

  • Communicate with other engineers to understand their needs for new equipment designs and help solve equipment and hardware issues.
  • Present new designs, discoveries, and test data to team members and participate in review sessions
  • Develop new machine concepts
  • Create new equipment designs in CREO CAD and manage the part release process
  • Utilize statistical methods and data collection in design verification testing and problem-solving
  • Perform analysis of new designs: thermal, stress, geometrical analysis, etc
  • Package electrical control systems and design for wire management
  • Work on multiple projects concurrently and have the flexibility to change priorities
  • Clearly organize and document your work

The Experience You Bring

  • 3+ years of professional experience in designing precision equipment, semiconductor equipment, and/or factory automation
  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Experience selecting and sizing different types of actuators, sensors, and pneumatic components.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Experience designing equipment for clean room applications
  • Experience with precision dispensing systems and UV curing
  • Experience mounting optics, illumination, and cameras
  • Experience designing equipment for precision alignments
  • Experience with flexures and air-bearings

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.
