At Making Waves, we are committed to educational equity. Making Waves Education Foundation is a Bay Area nonprofit that supports Making Waves Academy – a public charter school with more than 1,100 5th through 12th grade students – and leads college and career programming with more than 430 college students.

Centering historically underrepresented and underserved students and their college and career journeys, Making Waves Education Foundation helps make college affordable and graduation attainable. We partner with students to meet their dreams with personalized support – including college and career coaching, scholarships, and college financial planning.

Our alumni network includes more than 730 college graduates, who earn their degrees and land jobs at more than twice the rate of their peers, with 85% graduating from college debt-free.

ABOUT THE MARKETING & STORYTELLING INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Marketing and Storytelling team at Making Waves supports the organization's strategic goals through branding, marketing, storytelling, and digital and multimedia communications. Our work reaches a range of audiences, across a range of channels, and through a variety of mediums.

Our internship program provides an opportunity for college students to gain:

  • Paid, hands-on work experience in a supportive and accessible (remote) work environment
  • Exploration and learnings across a range of marketing, storytelling, and administrative projects
  • Career development support and reflections with Making Waves career specialists
  • Exposure to other fields and networking opportunities across Making Waves

This intern role is a member of the Marketing and Storytelling team, reporting to the Marketing Manager while working with others across the Making Waves team. This internship offers a wonderful opportunity to gain hands-on experience in social media marketing, content creation, and digital strategy. The ideal candidate is passionate about social media, stays up-to-date with the latest trends, and is eager to contribute fresh ideas to our brand's online presence. This position will contribute to planning, content creation, special projects, and will provide administrative support.

OUR COMMITMENT FOR THE MARKETING & STORYTELLING INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Marketing Intern role is a paid, part-time remote role for current college students located in California. More information is below:

  • Pay: An hourly rate of $18-$20 based on experience. In line with our commitment to equity, fairness, and transparency, we have adopted a no salary negotiation policy. We understand the historical inequities created by salary negotiations and believe in offering a starting salary that is fair and grounded in evidence collected during a clear, competency-aligned hiring process.
  • Remote work: This role can be 100% remote. A laptop will be provided as well as a monthly wi-fi reimbursement to successfully work remotely for the duration of the internship.
  • Schedule: The intern will work a set weekly schedule, averaging 6 hours a week. There could be fewer or more hours based on scheduling and projects, with room for flexibility around college breaks, midterms, and finals. The duration of the internship is six months (August to January).
  • Internship is 6 hours a week based on scheduling and projects, with a 1:1 meeting once a week during business hours.
  • Internship credit: This can be used for internship credit depending on your interest and academic program requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Support marketing planning and projects (30%)

  • Support aspects of planning and implementation for team projects including: social media strategy, content creation, and other digital communications.
  • Perform online research related to websites, social media, promotional items, publications, and designs; compile resources and best practices to inform projects.
  • Monitor social media trends and provide recommendations for content optimization, and conduct social listening to identify trends, conversations, and opportunities for engagement
  • Provide input, feedback, and perspectives on design concepts, update design templates, compile newsletters, and set up social media analytics.

Content Creation (50%)

  • Assist in creating, editing, and publishing engaging content across various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, and others.
  • Develop visually appealing graphics and videos using tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or other design software.
  • Write compelling copy for social media posts that aligns with our brand voice and messaging.
  • Create on-brand visual content about the college experience with consistent style, quality, and tone.
  • Participate in the planning, filming, and editing of video content for social media.
  • Schedule and publish posts using social media management tools.

Administrative support (20%)

  • Manage administrative tasks such as uploading or downloading files; organizing and labeling photos and videos; curating folders of photos for projects; captioning and adding alt text to website or social media images.
  • Attend meetings, brainstorm concepts for projects, provide reviews and input into marketing projects, including stories, reports, designs, and social content.
  • Support process improvement and the creation of guidelines or other resources.

KEY EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Required Qualifications:

  • You are a current college student, located in California
  • You are majoring in, are interested in, have experience or related skills in a marketing, communications, writing, or multimedia related field
  • You have experience using Microsoft and email communications
  • You have strong knowledge of social media platforms, particularly Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and their best practices.
  • You have good attention to detail and double check your work
  • You are organized and can meet deadlines
  • You can clearly communicate updates related to projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently a part of our Making Waves Foundation college success program
  • Experience working in an administrative setting, campus or retail job
  • Experience working or completing coursework remotely
  • Comfortable appearing on camera to help create video content
  • Comfortable working independently and providing regular updates in meetings and project management systems.
  • Experience creating content, writing, design, videography, or photography (personal or professional)
  • or willingness to learn systems: SharePoint, and our project management tool Asana.
  • Proficiency in Canva for graphic design and Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut, or Davinci Resolve for video creation and editing
  • Experience in creating content for social media platforms
