Managing Editor | Super Age

Optimism New York, NY

About Optimism

Optimism is a digital media company working to build a brighter web. We launch and operate a diverse portfolio of brands that spark curiosity, spread valuable information, and improve the lives of our readers. Leveraging an email-first strategy, we reach more than 5 million subscribers across our network of publications — and we’re growing every day.

About Super Age

Super Age is a new flagship brand that will deliver inspiring and actionable content to an audience interested in health & wellness, longevity, quality of life, and enthusiasm for reaching personal potential. Super Age will be a broad digital publication and lifestyle brand, including website, newsletter, and other forms of digital content. Super Age will be an iconic American brand in the next five years.

About The Role

As Managing Editor, you are a keystone piece of Super Age coming together. You will bring your deep experience from industries like health & wellness, nutrition, and senior lifestyle to make this brand come alive and bring tremendous value to its readers. You will work with Optimism leadership and the Founder of Super Age, David Stewart, to set the editorial vision for the brand. You will lead the editing and feature writing for all Super Age content. Over time, you will build a dedicated in-house editorial team and roster of freelance writers to ensure the content we publish is clear, accurate, and engaging.

Your day-to-day will include editing content for publication, commissioning and writing stories, overseeing and organizing the production of content for the brand, editing pieces submitted by freelance and staff writers, building those pieces within our content management system, and working with our campaign team to design campaigns and schedule the sending of our content via email.

Accountabilities

  • Editorial Vision: You will help establish and uphold the editorial vision for Super Age, which will – in large part through your leadership – become the household brand in the senior lifestyle space
  • Editorial Planning: You will build and program a seasonal editorial calendar, focusing on emerging and evergreen themes, with consideration for both in-email content and articles for the web, inclusive of brand partnerships and product developments on the company roadmap
  • Editing: You will help uphold the high standards we have in place, ensuring the pieces you work on are clear, accurate, and engaging
  • Content Management: You will prep content for publication, including building content into our CMS and ensuring those pieces are formatted correctly, especially in the early days when it is a hands-on operation
  • Inbox-First Strategy: You will work with members of our campaign team and wider Optimism data team to organize the content we want to send to our subscribers via Airtable, a project management tool we use in the construction of sending schedules
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: You will use dashboards that highlight key performance metrics to make strategic decisions regarding new content. As an email-first publisher, metrics such as open rate and click-through rate (CTR) are extremely important, as are web-based metrics such as session duration
  • Brainstorming: You will lead brainstorming meetings, pitching new ideas (and hearing pitches) for stories and pieces across the different topics within Super Age’s purview

Qualifications

  • A curious and inquisitive mind, with an ability to analyze and interpret data
  • Standout communication skills, both when speaking and in writing
  • The ability to stay organized and manage content effectively and efficiently for a publication that has many moving pieces
  • A keen awareness of email as a content delivery mechanism, and ideally knowledge of the strategies that help a newsletter perform well
