Skylight is a media platform dedicated to documenting and accelerating building decarbonization in New York City, starting with residential buildings. We publish well-researched, solutions-oriented stories about how New Yorkers are transforming buildings, providing our readers with practical solutions, resources, and community to support their clean energy work.
Our mission is to understand and report this economic, social, and physical transformation. Our startup environment is collegial; we are committed to superior reporting, rigorous investigation, and the importance of documenting the transition to clean energy. We are looking for a talented and passionate editor to join our team on a part-time basis.
Responsibilities:
Assign stories and investigations to reporters, photographers, digital designers, and data scientists.
Edit, proofread, and format articles for clarity, accuracy, and consistency; guide fact-checking.
Ensure that content aligns with our publication’s voice and style.
Collaborate with writers to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Manage the publication schedule, ensuring timely and consistent content updates.
Stay updated on what’s happening with trends and developments in clean energy housing.
Brainstorm and develop new content ideas, series, and investigations.
Champion maintaining the publication’s quality standards and editorial policies.
Engage with our readers and contribute to the growth of our community.
Qualifications:
Proven experience editing for a digital publication in journalism.
Excellent writing skills and a love of precision with language, grammar, and punctuation.
A passion for sustainability, clean energy, and housing-related topics.
Attention to detail and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
Proficiency in using content management systems and online publishing tools.
Ability to work independently.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Compensation:
The expected salary will be based on an hourly range of $50 – $70. This is a good-faith estimate of what we expect to pay; the actual salary will be based on the person’s experience and achievements. We are committed to full, fair compensation, and this range is not the cap for a career at Skylight.
