Managing Director, Medical Content Production

Provides strategy and leadership in the creation and distribution of health and cancer information, and resources for expanded audiences. Direct responsibilities for editorial management, financial and editorial development of information products. Supervises teams responsible for production and editorial management and development of products including utilization of multi-media channels and health technology. Curates content external to ACS for use within and outside the Enterprise.

Major Responsibilities

  • Creating content strategy for expanded audiences (including people with cancer, caregivers, health care professionals, employers and the general public)
  • Collaborating with internal and external subject matter experts for informing content strategy and production
  • Interaction with ACS Roundtables and Collaborations to support strategy and production for content needs
  • Provides strategy and editorial direction of innovative programming, products, and tools for content delivery
  • Works with other editorial staff and departments to identify opportunities for enhancements to content, tools, and functionality of cancer.org.
  • Directs the development of and implements processes to assure quality of content translated into other languages
  • Build editorial strategies consistent with ACS goals and procedures.
  • Ensure that ACS content is timely and evidence based.
  • Develop rich understanding of ACS constituent interactions, preferences and motivations and effectively develop strategies to achieve mission objectives.
  • Timely and accurate reporting to organization of all areas of responsibility.
  • Assist in building, reviewing and adhering to business plans.
  • Drive successful completion of business plans to accomplish established goals.
  • Responsible for workforce management (i.e. appropriate balance of staff to work volume in all areas of responsibility).
  • Budget development and management.
  • Share best practices within business unit and organization-wide to expand CRM and focus on constituent’s needs.
  • Organize and direct quality work efforts.
  • Maximize team performance.
  • Provide strategic guidance for team.
  • Negotiate solutions and resolve conflicts.
  • Develop, motivate and retain employees.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain external content and strategic relationships.

Knowledge/Skills

FORMAL KNOWLEDGE:

Seven years or more in designing/implementing education materials for expanded audiences. Background in media production, health technology and leadership. Strong editorial background preferred.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including leadership skills, communication and presentation skills, and the ability to motivate, negotiate and influence others.

  • Keen understanding of strategy and content development for health care consumers (general public, people with cancer, caregivers, health care professionals, etc.)
  • Ability to deliver consistently superior results on multiple projects.
  • Adult learning expertise

SPECIALIZED TRAINING OR KNOWLEDGE:

Experience with instructing medical professionals through multimedia. Experience with creating and managing content teams in multiple media, preferably at a national level/international level for a mainstream audience. Knowledge of editorial style, ethics, and journalistic processes.

Reports directly to the SVP of Medical and Health Content

DIRECT SUPERVISION GIVEN:

Supervises: One managing editor for medical content (supervising 2 production managers and 2 writer/copy editors), and 1 managing editor for medical content (supervising 2 copy editors and 2 Spanish Translation editors and 1 SEO specialist)

Frequent contact with internal departments and their executives, marketing/communications, discovery, ACS CAN

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Contacts for the audiences we’re serving such as leads for professional organizations, hospital systems, and educators, as well as relationships with vendors and agencies providing editorial and creative support.

The starting rate is $XX to $XX. The final candidate's relevant experience/skills will be considered before an offer is extended. Actual starting pay will vary based on non-discriminatory factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, experience, skills, specialty, and education
