Responsibilities

CHARLESTON STAGE seeks candidates to serve in the newly created position of Managing Director. The new Managing Director will join an organization with a solid financial foundation, dedicated staff and board, well-known brand, and a loyal audience. The Managing Director and Artistic Director will form a co-leadership team, with both positions reporting to the Board of Trustees through the President. The primary responsibilities of the Managing Director are these:

  • Establish and maintain a relationship of trust, encouragement, collaboration, and joyful exploration with the Artistic Director, staff, Board, artists, and supporters.
  • Ensure that all systems and procedures are aligned with a management philosophy that honors integrity and a dedication to strong business ethics.
  • Oversee all administrative and operational functions and look for efficiencies and improvements to protocol.
  • Lead annual budgeting process and monitor financial performance against goals.
  • Serve as a principal member of fundraising efforts.
  • Explore new compensation and benefits strategies to attract and retain a strong staff team.
  • Engage productively with the Artistic Director, Board and staff in strategic planning.
  • Be a financial development leader from both a contributed and earned income perspective, taking the time to learn about the philanthropic and patron culture in the region and to identify or create new previously unexplored revenue opportunities.
  • Find innovative ways to share Charleston Stage’s work within the community.
  • Be a leading voice in making sure that a strong dedication to EDI values is firmly rooted.

Charleston Stage, founded by playwright Julian Wiles in 1978, is South Carolina’s largest professional theatre company, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre. Charleston Stage has presented over 320 productions and played to a collective audience of over one million strong, employing 37 full time staff members as well as scores of actors, guest artists, dancers, singers and musicians and TheatreWings High School Apprentices. Bringing great drama, literature and history to over 20,000 young people in the Lowcountry each year, arts education has always been a cornerstone of Charleston Stage's mission. Education programs include special low price performances for over 19,000 school students each season, an after-school TheatreSchool program which provides theatre training for over 650 students each year, the TheatreWings Apprenticeship Program, a tuition-free pre-professional theatre training program for outstanding high school students, and ArtReach Workshops, led by members of Charleston Stage's Professional Resident Acting Company, bringing the magic of theatre to schools throughout the state.
