Position Summary

The LEE Marketing & Communications team drives the LEE network to action to end the injustice of educational inequity. As a nimble, innovative communications team operating across LEE’s core work, the Manager, Communications (Temporary) plays a central role in amplifying the impact of LEE and its members.

The Manager reports to the Senior Director, Brand & Digital Marketing and is an integral part of a team supporting the organization’s communications and scalable engagement. The Manager will have the opportunity to amplify LEE’s external brand awareness and positioning within the education sector and beyond. In collaboration with the team, this role will implement the communication strategy that aligns with organizational priorities and milestones while working across the organization to amplify the narratives of staff and LEE members. The ideal candidate for this role has public or media relations experience with a background in nonprofit and civic leadership settings.

The Manager, Communications (Temporary) role is a full-time, temporary position for up to 40 hours per week through 07/30/2025.

Position Location: Flexible

Travel Requirements: 5-10% travel, including regional or national travel for 1-2 team meetings

Responsibilities

Communications Content and Campaign Development (45%)

  • Research and create written content such as press releases, blogs, and member impact stories
  • Conceptualize, deploy, and measure external brand campaigns
  • Conduct interviews with members, staff, and key stakeholders for content development

Brand Communications Strategy Implementation (25%)

  • Implement robust communications strategies and resources as aligned with overall strategy and goals set by the Sr. Director, Brand & Digital Marketing
  • Create and support the adoption of messaging style, voice, tone, and crisis communications guidelines for use by the organization
  • Collaborate across the Marketing & Communications team to ensure all messaging adheres to guidelines

Public Relations Support (10%)

  • Communicate with members of the press for any media inquiries
  • Create protocols and guides for staff members who may have interaction with the press

Special Projects (10%)

  • Lead or contribute to team-level, org-wide, or cross-team special projects to accelerate impact as assigned by manager or designee
  • Provide short-term coverage of other Manager-level duties during a leave, vacancy, or PTO

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate work experience (If you do not hold a Bachelor’s degree an additional 4 years of relevant experience is required. If you hold an Associate’s degree an additional 2 years of relevant experience is required.)
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional work experience and 2 years of relevant work experience in strategic communications including media relations and digital communications
  • Exceptional writing abilities with an ability to produce mission-aligned and engaging content
  • Ability to manage, organize, plan, and follow through on projects independently
  • Attention to detail and a strong skill in proofreading as well as a high level of accuracy in work
  • Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies
  • Demonstrated ability to work with sensitive and confidential information with discretion and in a professional manner
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, & inclusion
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate within a geographically dispersed team
  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public or media relations agency experience

Physical Requirements & Work Demands

  • This position is primarily a sedentary role working with colleagues based around the country using remote technologies.
  • The person in this position may need to occasionally move about inside the office to liaise with staff or access office equipment.
  • The person in this position will need to have the ability to travel to in-person meetings in various U.S. cities.

Pay And Benefits

The position level for this role is Manager 1 and the corresponding hourly pay range for this position is $30.82-$43.65. Pay is competitive and based upon relevant experience and cost of labor for your location.
