POSITION TITLE: Lower School Director of Studies DEPARTMENT: Lower School REPORTS TO: Head of Lower School, Assistant Head of School FLSA: Exempt TERM: 12 Months
Position Purpose: Ensure that the school’s JK-12 curriculum is continuously under review relative to fulfillment of the school’s mission.
Responsible For
Leadership in fostering a vibrant, joyful, academically strong and developmentally appropriate mission-aligned elementary program, 2nd-4th grades
Working with teachers and LS administrative team to refine curricular programming to meet the needs of students.
Working with teachers and LS administrative team to help teachers refine their instructional craft.
Development and supervision of elementary faculty
Serve as a master teacher/instructional coach in 2nd-4th grades
Work with individual faculty in their goal setting and professional development (oversee PD budget for elementary program)
Develop and implement a schedule to visit classrooms regularly.
Assist Lower School Head in evaluating faculty
Assist Lower School Head in assignment of faculty
Visit classrooms regularly
Work with Lower School admin team and Director of Studies team to lead the following meetings:
Lower School staff meetings
Grade Coordinator Meetings
Curriculum/Program
Review schedule annually and refine as necessary
Recommend program improvements and formulate strategic plans for implementation of changes
Keep abreast of educational trends/best practices
Oversee implementation and analysis of ERBs annually and use data as one tool to evaluate program
Work with Director of Studies team to ensure philosophical and vertical alignment across all divisions
Work with teachers to integrate DEIB and SEL work into the program
Ensure smooth transition between early childhood and elementary, and elementary and middle school program
Work closely with administrative colleagues and faculty members to ensure a successful transition to new literacy program
Parent and Student Support
Work with teachers, counselors and ERP to support student growth and learning (on both ends)
Work on sectioning of students annually
Attend parent teacher conferences as needed
Attend ERP/Parent meetings with outside specialists as needed
Track student data to ensure program is meeting needs of all learners
Work with Lower School admin team and counselors to provide rich, meaningful parent education programs in 2nd-4th grades
Be a resource for families
Admissions
Serves on the admissions committee
Serves as a marketer for the elementary program, including speaking at admissions events
Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred with focus in curriculum development
Classroom experience
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated organizational skills
Experience with curriculum development and programmatic implementation
Personal Qualities
Ability to relate and interact with a varied group of people
Energetic and eager to engage actively with students, colleagues and parents
Ability to work in a highly interactive environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines
