Title: Library Assistant

Hours: Sunday -Thursday PM* / 10-month position (late August to mid-June)

Overview: Perform various functions in a high school library to assist in its operation, including maintaining and monitoring library space/resources and helping students, staff, and faculty in the full use of library services. Manage the library space, including afternoon and evening study hall in the library from 7-9:30 pm Sunday to Thursday when school is in session. The Library Assistant will also coordinate the development of a digital literacy and research curriculum in collaboration with the librarian and Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students, faculty, and staff in navigating the catalog and locating and using library resources
  • Provide leadership and expertise in digital literacy and learning; develop research-based curricula for the school that is informed by established frameworks and standards (e.g., AASL, Learning for Justice Digital Literacy Framework)
  • Collaborate with librarian and teaching faculty to integrate research and digital literacy skills into the classroom curricula and curate relevant information literacy resources for teachers
  • Maintain an organized and welcoming facility that helps students become independent users of the library
  • Work collaboratively to maintain library collection, resources, supplies, equipment, and space
  • Actively supervise students in the library during the day and evening study hall
  • Staff the circulation desk and help triage students seeking support from the technology department
  • Shelve books, journals, electronics, and other resources, perform minor book repairs and ensure electronics are in working order
  • Perform routine book maintenance and processing, including applying barcodes and spine labels, covering books, and updating the library management system’s catalog
  • Regularly and systemically perform shelf reading to maintain an organized collection and work with the librarian to curate, cull, and develop library resources
  • Manage correspondence for past-due books and resources
  • Assist librarian with interlibrary loans and book displays
  • Cultivate a welcoming, supporting, and inclusive library environment for students, staff, and faculty
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be assigned by the librarian, the director of the Burgess Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, or other school administrators.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree; academic training in library, science, or digital literacy a plus
  • Passion for working with high school students and a diverse school community
  • Proficiency with various technologies, including PC and Apple platforms, Google apps, Canva, and other web-based applications
  • Positive attitude, strong customer service skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in schools or with teens preferred
  • Physical demands for job-related tasks:
    • Frequent physical effort is required for such activities as carrying books (20-30 lbs.), bending, stretching, grasping, etc., to retrieve library materials
    • Able to view computer screens for extended periods.
    • When school is not in session/over school vacations, the position's hours can be flexible if pre-arranged in consultation with the supervisor.
