Library Assistant
Primary Purpose
Responsible for day-to-day on-site operation of campus library, working under minimal supervision or oversight by a district librarian.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas educational aide certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Ability to use library and media center resources to conduct research
Ability to follow district cataloging system
Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system
Ability to work well with children
Excellent, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Experience
Two years' experience working with children
One Year Library Experience Preferred

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds)
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Shelve all returned books, materials, and equipment daily.
- Check books in and out and maintain circulation records.
- Prepare bulletin boards, displays, and needed instructional materials.
- Make recommendations to district library coordinator for acquisitions of materials and equipment as needed.
- Receive new books, materials, and equipment and reconcile with packing slips and invoices.
- Schedule materials and reserve books for classroom instructional use.
- Perform routine maintenance by repairing books, magazines, materials, and equipment.
- Maintain library catalog. Process, organize, distribute, and maintain inventory of library/media center resources.
- Submit monthly report by the 5th of each month.
- Interact with students, faculty and staff to promote positive attitudes toward school library/media centers.
- Implement school library program and operate a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of student.
- Help library patrons use library/media center resources including computers and other equipment.
- Follow district library scope and sequence for library instruction and curriculum support.
- Provide individual and group instruction for students and other library users and help them locate resources and use research techniques.
- Collaborate with District Library Coordinator and Administration on appropriate use of technology materials.
- Provide orientation and training for students and faculty on software, systems and other library resources as needed.
- Assist students in developing competencies of listening, viewing, reading, and interpretation skills as dictated by the district Library Scope and Sequence.
- Maintain library catalog. process, organize, distribute, and maintain inventory of library/media center resources.
- Conduct a yearly inventory of all materials.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
- Supervise and monitor students as assigned and assist teachers to maintain appropriate student behavior and an orderly atmosphere.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in the Library/Media Services area.
- Comply with all District and Campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors, staff, and students.
- All other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
