Position Summary

The Library Assistant-Access Services is responsible for work related to the general operation of the Access Services unit (circulation, reserves, information commons, and stacks management) during scheduled shifts. The work week for the position is Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public, doctoral-level university, with six colleges and four Chairs of Excellence. The University has an enrollment of over 9,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of an estimated 166,000 people located approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesStaff the circulation desk as scheduled. Perform access services activities such as checking library materials in and out, receiving fines and fees, creating and maintaining patron information in the integrated library system, clearing holds, assisting users with printers and other library equipment, and answering phones.Develop and maintain familiarity with library services and resources, and provide basic reference and information services and technology assistance to library users.Assist with supervision and training of student assistants, ensuring that they provide appropriate service to library users and contribute to the effective operation of the library. Consult with the Circulation & Information Commons Supervisor about student assistant performance issues, and work with the Supervisor to find ways to address and solve them.Communicate regularly with the Circulation & Information Commons Supervisor to keep up-to-date on university and library issues. Inform the Supervisor, the Access Services Coordinator and the Director of Library Services about issues or problems that arise during scheduled shifts.Assist with monitoring library security points and behavior of library users during evening hours, and work with students to keep behavior and noise under control.Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on printers, photocopiers, and microform reader-printers.Serve on university and library committees as required.Perform other job-related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, the University community, and the public.Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately, orally and in writing.Ability to provide customer-oriented service.Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and workflows.Ability to learn and perform access services and basic reference functions.Ability to operate a personal computer and associated software (e.g., MS Word, Excel) and to learn specific applications such as SungardHE Banner and Alma/Primo.Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.Ability to be punctual and to work a varying schedule.Ability to perform routine maintenance on printers, copiers and microform reader-printers.Ability to read printed materials and computer screens.Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to twenty pounds and to retrieve and transport library materials from shelvesRequired Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent.Prior work experience providing customer service; library experience preferred.Previous experience using MS Office Suite and Web browsers.A background check will be required of the successful applicant.An official transcript (if applicable) and names, addresses and phone numbers of three references will be required for the successful applicant.
