About Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG)

Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) is a non-profit, broad-based, public interest advocacy coalition focused on the need to expand, integrate, and modernize the North American grid in order to create a cleaner, more efficient, and more resilient high-capacity transmission system for all Americans.


ACEG’s mission is to educate key interested parties and the public to support policies and regulations favoring the expansion, modernization, and integration of the high-voltage electric transmission grid in order to achieve a clean energy economy. ACEG executes its mission by organizing diverse support from utilities, developers, business, labor, environmental groups, customers, and other transmission supporters.


ACEG is a 501(c)(3) public charity. Through a cost-sharing agreement, an independently incorporated organization, Clean Energy Grid Action (Grid Action) pays for occasional services of ACEG employees. Grid Action, a 501(c)(4) organization, advocates for policies to expand, modernize, and integrate the high-capacity transmission grid. This position will entail work for both ACEG and Grid Action.


Position Description

ACEG is looking for an experienced Legislative or Deputy Director to drive its policy objectives and further the development of a modernized and reliable grid and the advancement of the clean energy economy to benefit consumers. 


The Director responsibilities include:

  • Work with Executive Director and ACEG Board to develop policy priorities and work with federal and state regulators, Congress and staff, business executives, non-profit and community leaders to advance ACEG’s mission.
  • Mobilize conservative, progressive, economic development, labor, and consumer groups to support ACEG’s mission and policy priorities.
  • Oversee Grid Action operations, including managing the legislative strategy, coordinating with Grid Action’s government relations consultant and other interested parties to accomplish its policy objectives.
  • Represent ACEG in meetings with policy makers, building relationships with key legislative staff to educate them on ACEG’s mission.
  • Coordinate with other members of ACEG staff and consultants in developing and implementing strategy across legislative, regulatory, and communications arenas.
  • Support the Board of Directors and board committees on their work, ensuring members of the board are brought into key decisions and that board meetings are efficient and productive.



Key Qualifications

ACEG is open to this position being a Legislative Director or Deputy Director, depending on qualifications and experience.


Key qualifications for the position include:

  • 6+ years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas: policy advocacy, coalition building, clean energy, regulatory and/or legislative action, non-profit management, and/or communications.
  • Expertise in key issues regarding the electric grid, transmission, energy markets, and policy.
  • Experience with transmission planning and development and federal or state electricity policy preferred, but not required.
  • A highly organized leader with the ability to build and mobilize a diverse coalition in support of advocacy campaigns to achieve key transmission policy objectives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience educating members of the U.S. Congress and congressional staff on complex topics with one or more of the following: the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Congress, state public service commissions, Department of Energy, utilities, renewable energy developers, non-profit organizations, labor groups, or trade associations.
  • Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for candidates with a post-graduate degree.
  • Experience working on campaigns to persuade policy makers on both sides of the political aisle and demonstrated ability to work with coalitions made up of individuals with conflicting positions to build consensus.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skills with experience being a thought partner with executive-level staff on how to accomplish long-term and short-term organizational goals most effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to manage a complex organization with multiple initiatives and multiple engaged interested parties.



Salary and Benefits


The salary range for this position is $105,000-$150,000, commensurate with skills and experience.


All ACEG employees are eligible for its comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, fully paid by ACEG for the employee.
  • Dependent care, transit, parking, and health Flexible Spending Accounts with an employer contribution.
  • 401(k) with employer match of up to 5% of salary.
  • Life and AD&D, Short-term Disability, and Long-term Disability Insurance.
  • 20 paid vacation days per year, 12 days of sick leave, 12 paid holidays, and ACEG is closed between December 26 and 31 each year.


Location: This position is in Washington, D.C. to provide for centrally located meetings with stakeholders and decision-makers but is flexible with off-site work arrangements.
