Job Responsibilities

This employee will serve as a Pilot within SCDNR's Aviation Unit, ensuring the section remains effective in order to meet the needs of DNR officers, division, agency, and other state/federal and local government entities.

Job Duties Include

  • Performing scheduled flight missions as well as unscheduled flight missions that often require routine non-standard working hours.
  • Dealing with non-routine situations in a logical and professional manner.
  • Serving as the primary Aviation Unit expert on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and FLIR system.
  • Assisting the Chief Pilot in coordinating scheduled and unscheduled maintenance performed on aircraft, FLIR system, and drones.
  • Ensuring aircraft are safe, airworthy and all equipment is kept operational.
  • Ensuring all airworthiness directives and mandatory service bulletins have been reviewed and considered.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Chief Pilot or Captain.
  • Assisting Chief Pilot, who serves as the liaison to the FAA, with all aviation compliance requirements, when requested.
  • Attending FAA or other appropriate industry sponsored aviation meetings, seminars or training as directed/required/needed.
  • Attending regular DNR Aviation Unit pilot meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintaining Law Enforcement Class I certification.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate with airplane multi-engine land, instrument rating; airplane single-engine land, instrument rating; and current Class II aviation medical, and rated for the types of aircraft operated by the department (Cessna 206, Cessna 210 and Vulcanair/Partenavia P68).

A bachelor's degree or (120) One Hundred Twenty college credit hours; OR An associates degree (or two (2) years of college credit equating to (60) semester credit hours) combined with two (2) years of related experience; OR Four (4) years of service as a certified class 1 law enforcement officer; OR Four (4) years active military service in security positions; OR Thirty (30) college credit hours, with a high school diploma or (GED). Related experience will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Incumbent must be 21 years of age, completed required semester credit hours and/or received a bachelor's degree by December 31, 2022. Must be a U.S. citizen; no record of conviction of violation of state or federal game and fish laws within three (3) years of hire date. Preferred Qualifications

Possess at the least the minimum flight experience for aircraft category and class as specified in current DNR Flight Operations Manual (Pilot in Command - 1000 hours and Category and Class - 200 hours). Extensive knowledge of applicable FAA regulations, aircraft performance characteristics and operating procedure for aircraft operated by the department, DNR Flight Operations Manual, DNR policies and procedures for aircraft operated by the department, DNR Policies and Procedures Manual, and all applicable game, fish and boating laws.

Ability to tolerate irregular schedules including nights and weekends. Ability to work outdoors under all weather conditions. Be physically fit and have stamina and endurance. Ability to meet required swimming standards (swimming standards must be met by the end of basic training at SCCJA and Wildlife Basic, approximately 20 weeks). Able to operate motor vehicles and/or boating equipment. Maintain LE Officer commission and NASBLA certification standards. Ability to operate with a high degree of individual discretion in performing Pilot duties.
