What You Will Do

In this role, you will provide law enforcement and protective services functions for the SCDOR while ensuring the safety and protection of all employees, visitors, and property for the SCDOR.

Primary Job Duties Include

  • Screening all visitors and making determinations of their needs and requirements to direct them to the proper person.
  • Operating various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects.
  • Performing searches which may include physical interaction with employees and visitors.
  • Responding to and investigating emergencies, disturbances, complaints, and reports of violations.
  • Patrolling assigned area to deter and/or detect violations.
  • Maintaining order and enforcing state regulations.
  • Exercising arrest powers and testifying in court.
  • Providing administrative duties to include preparing and submitting routine incident and activity reports, accurately recording visitor information, and preparing other documentation as needed.
  • Operating telecommunications or radio equipment to provide dispatch services.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • Either:
  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a law enforcement agency OR
  • A bachelor's degree
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Currently possess Class 1 Basic Law Enforcement Certification or be able to obtain
  • Must be physically able to lift, bend, and stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Must be able to obtain an SC Constable Commission I as required by SLED
  • May require statewide travel and overnight stay

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified or formerly certified law enforcement officer
  • Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and modern law enforcement techniques and procedures
  • Knowledge of how to collect and preserve evidence
  • Knowledge of the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel
  • Knowledge of the laws one is responsible for enforcing
  • Knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of other law enforcement agencies
  • Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment

  • Training: Law Enforcement Officers will participate in a training program to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to successfully perform their job.
  • Hours: Work hours may vary based on the staffing needs of the SCDOR between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.
  • Retirement: This position falls under the Police Officers Retirement System
