Salary: DFT Salary Schedule +$5,000 stipend

Reports to: Content Lead

Bargaining Unit: Detroit Federation of Teachers

Travel: Travel is required.

Annual Schedule: 40 weeks

Telcommuting Eligibility: Not eligible for telecommuting

In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary

DPSCD is seeking Coaches on Special Assignment (COSA) across grade levels who specialize in Literacy, Math, Science, and/or Social Studies. As a member of School Support Teams, COSAs will work in close coordination with school Instructional Leadership Teams to analyze student and school data and develop and implement coaching plans for a specific caseload of teachers based on findings from the data. COSAs will support PK-12 classroom teachers in implementing instructional practices aligned with DPSCD’s Vision for Excellent Instruction, School Improvement Model, and adopted instructional materials.

Required Professional Learning

COSAs will be required to participate in DPSCD professional learning for coaches over the summer. (Attendees will be paid the daily workshop rate for attendance at summertime learning.)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid Michigan teaching certificate in focus content area and/or grade band of support required.
  • Bachelor's degree, advanced coursework in content area and/or grade band of support required.
  • Five or more years successful teaching experience (all Effective or Highly Effective ratings for the most recent five years) required.
  • Experience facilitating grade/team level/adult professional learning required.
  • Knowledge of literacy, math, science, and/or social studies standards
  • Knowledge and appropriate use of DPSCD aligned instructional practices to help all students develop content knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Recognition of a variety of assessment purposes and experience utilizing formative, screening, and diagnostic tools to inform instruction.
  • Proficiency in technology-based instructional tools, such as i-Ready and Zearn, and organizational tools, including but not limited to Microsoft 365.

Essential Functions

  • Implement DPSCD’s coaching model according to DPSCD’s philosophy for instructional coaching and DPSCD’s four mindsets of coaching – listening to learn, extracting expertise, making thinking visible, and replicating to innovate.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with school leaders and teaching staff by participating in school Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) meetings.
  • Work with school leaders to define student outcome goals for caseload schools.
  • Create a professional and collaborative environment with school leaders, teachers, and coaching colleagues that includes mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability.
  • Analyze data to create individualized coaching plans and tailored pathways of professional learning for teachers.
  • Coach a caseload of classroom teachers to support implementation of DPSCD’s instructional materials aligned to the DPSCD’s School Improvement Model and Vision for Excellent Instruction:
    • Diagnose a teacher’s coaching needs using a variety of data sources, including observational data and formative assessment processes.
    • Develop a coaching plan to address coaching needs.
    • Facilitate coaching cycles to implement the coaching plan, including planning for and rehearsing priority lessons, observing instruction, and debriefing the observation.
  • Draw upon aligned district resources, including technological tools, to support teacher coaching.
  • Record and monitor coaching activities and teacher progress using DPSCD tools and procedures.
  • Support school-based staff, especially Master Teachers, with facilitating schoolwide common planning and learning analysis sessions during afterschool professional learning time.
  • Participate in district-led professional learning about coaching and content.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Security Clearance

Internal Applicants
