Jr. Audio Visual & Lighting Technician

The Jr. AV and Lighting Technician is fully knowledgeable of advanced exhibition components relating to museum AV and lighting systems, as well as their installation and maintenance needs. This position must be proficient in museum electrical elements and systems including internet and stand-alone based media interactives. The individual must be able to build and program basic kiosks using a mix of media and file types. Individuals must be able to provide technical design support to museum staff pertaining to multimedia material and lighting during exhibition planning stages. This individual must be able to work with 3-D models, along with implementation of VR and AR project components. They must be able to organize and manipulate complex data and file sets to ensure successful digital initiative builds. They must be able to organize and implement exhibition systems integrations to connect and control a wide range of equipment, media, interactives, and lighting. They must have organized and clear file creation and retention practices. They will have a superior sense of image and sound quality to maintain museum quality and consistency.

As this individual works with multiple departments, staff members, vendors, and the public, excellent interpersonal, and both written and verbal skills are a key factor. While the Jr. AV & Lighting Technician’s main responsibility is working with the equipment and systems, they must also respond to issues on the floor, and the development of new exhibition elements and systems. The individual must be able to interact with others and efficiently communicate concepts, design intent, issues, solutions, progress, and timelines.

They must be able to balance timelines for new project creation with maintenance and unforeseen AV & lighting issues that arise. They should be able to provide clear and concise solutions to help keep all informed and to move to a quick and professional resolution.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Review design briefs, assets, and scripts to determine requirements.
  • Create concepts and ideas to convey relevant content and design intent from both design documents and verbal instructions.
  • Develop and design AV systems plans and equipment schedules, implement, test, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain all audio-visual equipment and installations used for museum exhibitions.
  • Develop and design lighting plans and equipment schedules, install, test, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain all lighting used for museum exhibitions.
  • Perform basic wiring and circuit management required for the installation and upkeep of AV and lighting.
  • Liaison with Collection Lead to determine safe lighting levels and methods for all objects displayed in an exhibition.
  • Liaison with Access Lead to determine suitable AV and Lighting conditions for visitors with disabilities.
  • Effectively communicate with various departments, department heads, curators, designers, fabricator, and external production companies in order to plan, schedule, test, execute, and produce AV and lighting exhibition elements.
  • Concept, research, and create AV and lighting plans, and present AV and lighting technology to contribute to the exhibition design process.
  • Specify and procure AV and lighting equipment for the successful and timely installation of exhibitions.
  • Maintain, organize, and build storage units or systems for equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory of all AV and lighting equipment.
  • Perform regular condition checks and maintenance as required for all AV and lighting.
  • Create and maintain a digital archive of all equipment files, media files, systems files related to AV and lighting, maintenance methods and records, AV and Lighting production and design files, and purchase records.
  • Maintain excellent job management skills, strategic planning skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Must be a proactive problem solver that works well under pressure.
  • Able to work on 4+ projects concurrently.
  • Proficient in a wide range of design software, including but not limited to: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and InDesign, AutoCAD, Intuiface, Wordpress, and Sketchup. Working knowledge of Unity and Unreal Engine a plus.
  • Working knowledge of CSS3, HTML5, and JavaScript a plus.
  • Able to work in a PC based environments.
  • Maintain museum quality safe practices for all AV and Lighting designs and installations.

Other Duties As Required By Management And Project Demands.

Qualified candidates will have a BS/BA degree from an accredited college, university, or equivalent and 4 years of AV and lighting design, production, installation and maintenance experience in a museum environment or equivalent.

Demonstrated track record of high ethical character. Ability to understand sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Strong interpersonal and communication skills at all levels of the organization, from line workers to senior management level. Strong critical thinking, complex problem solving skills. Highly organized and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
