Employment Status: Permanent Full Time Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Requires availability outside of core working hours on an as needed basis. Compensation: Grade 8: Salary range starting at $23.06/hour

Definition/Summary

The Information Technology Specialist works under the Supervision of the Assistant City Manager. Incumbent performs a variety of technical duties including maintaining and administering computer networks and related computing environments including systems software, application software, hardware, and configurations.

Documents, maintains, upgrades, or replaces hardware and software systems, as appropriate. Advises on planning and development of future computer purchases for City Departments. May include help developing computer policies for City Employees, learning specialized scripting/programming for various software programs used in City Departments, and develop training courses for City Employees. Streamlines systems and processes to improve productivity. Solves real-world problems.

Essential Duties

  • Maintaining and administering computer networks and related computing environments including systems software, applications software, hardware, and configurations.
  • Performing disaster recovery operations and data backups when required.
  • Protecting data, software, and hardware by coordinating, planning, and implementing network security measures.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving hardware, software, and other network and system problems.
  • Replacing faulty network hardware components when required.
  • Maintaining, configuring, and monitoring virus protection software and email applications.
  • Monitoring network performance to determine if adjustments need to be made.
  • Conferring with network users about solving existing system problems.
  • Operating master consoles to monitor the performance of networks and computer systems.
  • Coordinating computer network access and use.
  • Designing, configuring, and testing networking software, computer hardware, and operating system software.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirememts

  • Works in a professional setting with administrators, police, fire, engineers, planners, technicians, IT professionals, etc. for a combination of office and fieldwork.
  • Ability to function under time constraints and be flexible to work when needed, including day and evening meetings, and occasional evening and weekend work.
  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Alternate frequently between sitting/standing/walking throughout an eight (8) hour workday. This position may also periodically require bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • Lift/carry a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.
  • Specific vision abilities that may be required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used

Office equipment used on a regular basis includes telephone, computer, photocopier, facsimile machine, scanner, calculator, cellular phone. Other equipment used includes servers, audio and visual systems, television, and wi-fi devices.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication ability, both written and verbal.
  • Personable, professional demeanor.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple problems simultaneously
  • High school diploma.
  • Degree in computer science or related field is preferable.
  • Preference given to candidates with the following: CASP, CEH, CISSP, GSEC, GCIH, Sec+, Net+, A+, Cloud+, CCNA, CCNP, CCDP, CCDA, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, MCITP, MTA.

KNOWLEDGE:

Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to create accurate network diagrams and documentation for design and planning network communication systems.
  • Ability to work with all levels of staff within and outside of IT and outside the organization.
  • Consult with clients, vendors, and personnel in other departments to discuss and resolve issues.
  • Provide for the implementation, configuration, deployment, and support of systems, including, but not limited to client computing devices and servers
  • Knowledge of hardware/software technology and concepts
  • Network security experience.
  • LAN and WAN experience.

Licensure/Certifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
