Under the general supervision of the Supervising Criminal Investigator I, the Investigator in the Office of Criminal Investigations (OCI) is a Sworn Peace Officer and is primarily responsible for the investigative duties involved in enforcement of California’s Hazardous Waste Law. The Range A Investigator handles the less difficult cases under close supervision of the Supervising Criminal Investigator I; the Range B Investigator handles cases of average complexity under supervision, and the Range C Investigator handles the most complex cases under supervision, independently or as a team leader.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • Investigates violations of the California Hazardous Waste Control Law by responding to complaints, tips and other information to OCI that alleges illegal hazardous waste activities in the state.
  • Investigatory plans and methods include may be required to obtain hazardous waste samples.
  • Incumbent may conduct undercover surveillance that may require travel throughout the state and paid overtime.
  • Write and execute search warrants; serve subpoenas, and make arrests. Plan, organize and conduct effective law enforcement operational briefings.
  • Draft concise official investigatory reports that can be submitted for legal prosecution.
  • Be able to testify in court and administrative hearings about case findings.

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Bilingual spanish preferred, but not required. Must pass Spanish Fluency Examination
  • POST Certification preferred, but not required
