International Chartering Specialist

The International Chartering Specialist shall have a strong understanding of global oil trade flows and freight markets. The role’s primary responsibility is to develop and execute freight trading strategies in the spot and Time Charter market. The International Chartering Specialist will work with commodity traders on chartering in vessels to support safe, reliable, and economical transportation of Phillips 66 cargoes globally. The role requires close collaboration across all marine functions, particularly in bridging and aligning the Global Chartering group with operations, vetting, and demurrage policies and standards. Further, the role provides marine support and expertise to company initiatives/projects as well as FFA trading activity. Working closely with internal customer Commercial, VCS&O, Marketing, Midstream, and Refining to understand their marine needs, the position translates this to executable business optionality and positions. The position requires a high level of commercial aptitude, process integrity, and analytical ability.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Provide expert advice to the Global Chartering Team and Global Chartering Manager in execution of the Phillips 66 overall charter portfolio strategy
  • Fundamental knowledge and views on market supply and demand balances, able to identify and execute on positions and opportunities that provide competitive freight advantage to Phillips 66
  • Day to day spot chartering with focus on safe transportation while providing tanker market insight to forecast, plan, optimize, hedge, and implement freight strategies that creates value and profit to the company
  • Negotiate Charter Party terms with vessel owners, operators, and brokers that finds value operationally and economically to the company in coordination with legal advice and policies
  • Identify short- and long-term Time Charter opportunities in both the physical and paper markets
  • Optimize the time-chartered fleet to maximize utilization and earnings
  • Provide substantial input across the Value Chain, working with internal stakeholders to turn regional or global information into value for the company
  • Marine logistics competence and the application of analytical tools to analyze, schedule and optimize assets
  • Drive compliance with company's processes and marine risk policies
  • Utilize extensive network of internal and external relationships that lead to successful deal execution
  • FFA execution of both speculative and hedge trading positions

Required Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 7 or more years direct experience in International Chartering within a Commercial/trading organization
  • Able to take physical and/or paper positions and understand risk/reward balance
  • Strong background and understanding of marine operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 or more years direct experience in International Chartering within a Commercial/trading organization
  • Broad understanding of marine risk policies.
  • Broad understanding of International maritime regulations
  • Excellent analytical skills to develop a forward view to trade and execute
  • Open to diversity of thought and collaboration
  • Strong advocate of ethical business practices
  • Fundamental understanding of commodity markets and global marine chartering business processes required
  • Strong leadership, facilitation, planning, and organizational skills required
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills with preference for action, accountability, and developing alternatives and solutions
  • Strong desire for personal learning and knowledge sharing skills
  • Self-motivated, takes ownership and drives resolution of problems in a safe and practical manner

The Commercial organization works to effectively leverage assets and market knowledge to create additional value within the risk parameters of the Company. We do this by maximizing general interest profitability, enhancing return on capital employed by successfully partnering with the Refining, Transportation and Marketing functions to ensure Value Chain Integration. Our truck and rail fleets support our feedstock and distribution operations. Rail movements are provided via a fleet of more than 10,000 owned and leased rail cars. Truck movements are provided through numerous third-party trucking companies, as well as through our 100 percent-owned subsidiary, Sentinel Transportation LLC.
