Interim Nurse Director of Surgical Services

Purpose: The Interim Nurse Director will be responsible for driving and executing operational management and strategic leadership across client hospital departments. They will serve in this capacity until a permanent replacement is selected by the facility and assume the director’s responsibilities for a specific Surgical Services Department as outlined by the facility. The right candidate will be proactive and solution-oriented with a client-focused approach, and patient safety top of mind. They should also be a strong relationship builder, agile to new environments, and able to support transformational positive change.


Primary Goal: The goal of the position is to ensure exceptional patient care by leading Surgical departments within client facilities through transitions and change. The responsibilities for this role include overseeing Surgical operations, personnel management, and implementing customized strategies to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable, positive transformations.


Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities


  • Works collaboratively with the Clinical Chief Medical Officer, Chief Executive Officer, CNO, and the Medical Director of Perioperative Serviceson the day-to-day operations, including: Scheduling, Same Day, OR, PACU, PAT, Materials, and SPD
  • On-site for a total of forty (40) hours per week. The work schedule will be left to the discretion of the Client
  • Plans, directs and evaluates the overall operation of the Department
  • Participates in the development and implementation of surgical policies & procedures to ensure they maintain standards to meet local, state, and national regulatory compliance
  • Available to surgeons, anesthesiologists, staff, and administration
  • Assesses and develops a prioritized work plan of activities
  • Assists in the development of a communication plan with leadership
  • Dresses in scrubs and makes daily rounds; provides ongoing support to staff members in the scrub and circulating roles
  • Ensures that “daily huddles” are held with nursing staff before the start of each shift; additionally, afternoon collaborative huddles will be held with the Medical Director and key personnel to review scheduling and pre-operative activities before the day of surgery
  • Provides oversight of OR hours and staffing to meet surgeons’ requirements and strives to minimize overtime
  • Mentors staff on an ongoing basis to provide safe, quality care for all areas of responsibility
  • Ensures that patient safety goals are being met
  • Ensures that the facility is preparing for an unannounced Joint Commission survey
  • Monitors staff education and ensures that all competencies are kept up-to-date
  • Evaluates staff competencies and value to the department, working to address practice patterns with the sites policies and corrective actions plans
  • Provides recommendations and formalized educational processes to improve staff competencies by function and role
  • Ensures that collaboration occurs between the Medical Director, anesthesia, and nursing leadership
  • Supports the site’s efforts in collaboration with Human Resources to secure a perioperative director
  • Manages the budget of the perioperative department and ensures financial resources are utilized efficiently
  • Oversees the payroll process for the perioperative nursing department, ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant laws and regulations


Education & Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field required, Master’s degree preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years as a Perioperative Nurse Director
  • A minimum of five (5) years of Perioperative management experience
  • Leadership Competencies are as follows: Business Acumen. Building Strategic Relationships, Building Trust, Coaching & Developing Others, Customer Focus, Compelling Communication, Driving for Execution /Results, Quality Orientation
  • COVID vaccination (as required by hospital or facility)


Licensure & Certifications


  • CNOR certification required
  • Licensure in the state of placement will be required. Candidates with Compact Licensure are preferred, with the ability to obtain licensure in other states as needed.

Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Frequent interaction with a diverse population including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies, and other members of the public. The function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures.
