Qualified Medication Aide Job Description

Qualified Medication Aide (QMA) assists the nursing staff and administers residents’ medications. Maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other departments, residents, doctors, case managers, and members of the public to coordinate operations and exchange information.

Essential Functions

• Prepares and administers medications, including nasal, ear, and eye drops, topical treatments and dressings, and rectal/vaginal medications. Verifies medical charts match doctors’ orders and charts all medications administered to and/or refused by residents, including time administered and amount. Notes behavior/ condition of resident.
• Monitors residents’ vitals, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, intake and output of fluids, and weight.
• Collects specimens, such as urine and stool specimens, for lab work for pick up per facility protocol.
• Performs accuchecks tests as directed.
• Interacts with residents on a one-on-one basis and listens to their concerns or problems
  
  

and resolves problems.

• According to ability. Attends to residents when they fall and/or need assistance.
  
  

Provides A.M./P.M. care, including grooming, restroom assistance, and bathing of

residents as needed.

• Tracks admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents. Notifies the nurse or
  
  

supervisor, doctors, and/or family members, depending upon the situation or

procedure performed.

• Counts narcotics and cleans/ re-stocks nurse’s station and medication carts at the
  
  

beginning and end of every shift.

• Communicates with doctors’ offices and pharmacies to facilitate ordering of
  
  

medications and supplies.

• Arranges transportation and prepare medical files/papers for residents’
  
  

appointments.

• Attends in-service or completes online training to maintain certification.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  
  

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.Graduate of State-approved training program in medication administration.Knowledge of confidentiality/HIPAA laws.Skill and knowledge of basic public relations concerning residents, their friends, and relatives in the community.Ability to listen and communicate respectfully and caringly with residents.Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment. Ability to read, write, and speak English and use standard office equipment, including copier, fax machine, and telephone.Ability to manage situations involving potential physical harm to self and others and/or situations involving violent/irate individuals.Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other departments, residents, doctors, case managers, and the public in a courteous and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct. Ability to provide public access to or maintain department information and records confidentiality according to state requirements.Ability to occasionally work extended hours.
