Instrumentation & Controls - Supervisor

Summary: Responsible for the effective supervision of all Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Technicians. Must ensure efficient and productive utilization of assigned personnel and financial resources to minimize the downtime and the cost of plant equipment. Must follow all company procedures to maintain a safe workplace and comply with all regulatory requirements.

Responsible for the reliable day-to-day operations of RED-Rochester’s (RED) Instrumentation and Control System infrastructure.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Will serve on RED’s Leadership Team.
  • Manage a team of technicians providing park wide I&C support for all of RED’s plant equipment and customer metering. Scheduling I&C team activities including developing job plans and work orders in the CMMS system (Maximo).
  • Manage I&C Tech team performance using goal development, performance progress meetings, performance end-of-year reporting, performance awards, and performance corrective activities.
  • Manage I&C Tech team training and development.
  • Provide technical support to Energy and Wastewater Treatment Operations to ensure continued reliable and efficient operations.
  • Provide technical support to control system technicians for Instrumentation/Metering problems, control system hardware or configuration issues.
  • Assist Manager and Engineers in integrating new capital project equipment into the control system infrastructure.
  • Ensure all control systems are highly reliable and cost effectively maintained.
  • Develop and implement effective I&C Preventative Maintenance (PM) programs to improve equipment availability and efficiency, including the entering of PM details in the CMMS system for effective and timely execution.
  • Identify, specify, quote, and procure material needed for day to day I&C task or small projects, including entering purchasing details in the CMMS system.
  • Identify and implement cost effective control systems projects, including automation of existing equipment to improve operational efficiencies and system flexibility to drive production costs down.
  • Act as Project Manager when necessary to implement small control system projects. Must be able to marshal the people and resources needed to successfully plan, schedule and execute projects on time and on budget.
  • Manage the maintenance of RED’s Distribution Metering infrastructure to ensure accurate and timely billing to RED’s customers including meter maintenance, monthly process meter reads, and metering upgrades.
  • Assist manager in developing and managing team Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
  • Assist manager in developing future budgets and managing current year I&C team budget.

Education And/or Experience

  • Associate's degree preferred, in engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with instrumentation, flow metering, and control systems, preferably in a utility, facility, or industrial plant environment.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience in a utilities, facilities, or industrial environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • CMMS Software experience (SAP, Oracle, or Maximo)
  • Experience required with distributed control systems (DCS), their function, and operational/maintenance needs.
  • Emerson Ovation experience is a plus.

Competencies

  • Mechanical and electrical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industrial utility equipment and systems including boilers, gas turbines, steam turbines, generators, chillers, cooling towers, and air compressors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the National Electrical Code and other applicable NFPA codes.
  • Must be a results-driven self-starter with the desire to manage diverse teams to bring creative solutions to a dynamic operating environment.
  • Demonstrates a high level of emotional intelligence and can communicate in a calm, professional manner in stressful environments.
  • Able to communicate and explain technical ideas in layman’s terms to assist leadership and others without technical expertise in making informed decisions.
  • Dedication to customer service and understanding that our most important customer is RED Operations.
  • Able to adjust easily to rapid change, possesses a strong sense of urgency, and can work well under pressure.
  • Technical problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills are required.
  • Possesses excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Work Environment

  • A combination of normal office/desk, shop, and heavy industrial park conditions.
  • Must go in the field on jobs to supervise employees working outside in all weather conditions from street level to rooftops. Working inside in extreme conditions from basements to rooftops and above including inspections of cooling towers. The possibility of temperatures ranging from extreme cold to over 100 degrees. Work takes place in chemical areas, noisy areas, and areas that may be very dirty. Also supervising employees operating heavy-duty machinery and vehicles including, boom-lifts (worker lifts), scissors lifts, fork trucks, and power-walkie trucks.

Physical Demands

  • Able to operate computer keyboards, printers, copiers, etc.
  • Visual and hearing ability.
  • Able to move between buildings in Eastman Business Park which may require climbing multiple flights of stairs from time to time.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to use a company or personal car to travel about Eastman Business Park which covers approximately 5 square miles.
