Floretta P. Carson Visual and Performing Arts Academy (FPCVPAA), a public charter school located in the heart of Mobile, AL provides a seven- year comprehensive academic and conservatory arts program to students in grades 6-12. Established in 2023, FPC VPAA is one of the premier arts schools in Alabama, where aspiring young artists have the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 16 pre-professional arts conservatories.FPC VPAA serves a culturally diverse student body across Mobile and surrounding areas. Based on the belief that creative artistry is fueled by intellectual insight, FPC VPAA prepares students for careers in visual and performing arts and/or post-secondary education by providing engaging, academically rigorous, and responsive lessons, and continuous opportunities for students to excel beyond their current ideas of creativity.
Position Description: The Instrumental Music Director is responsible for the development and direction of the Strings and Orchestra, Wind Studies, Jazz Studies, and Piano programs in order to establish a creative, challenging, and nurturing environment that offers students unparalleled preparation for higher education and a profession in the arts.
Reporting: The Instrumental Music Director reports to the Principal.
Duties And Responsibilities
Collaborates with arts instructors/directors to develop a strategic plan for continued conservatory growth
Communicates effectively with parents, students, faculty, and colleagues
Develops and oversees curriculum and assessments for the Instrumental Music conservatory
Teaches various courses in the conservatory program
Participates in school meetings and professional development activities
Organizes and conducts the student selection process
Develops and manages Instrumental Music recruitment initiatives
Conducts open house presentations for prospective students and parents
Oversees all aspects of Instrumental Music events, productions, and performances
Manages community outreach, special projects, arts partnerships, and guest artist relationships
Develops and manages Instrumental Music fundraising activities
Manages Instrumental Music budget and administration
Actively performs at a professional level in area of expertise and participates in professional music or music education organizations
Preferred Qualifications
Master's and/or Doctorate Degree
Professional Strings Instructor
Professional Teacher Certificate (within area of expertise)
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree (within area of expertise)
While the candidate may have a single area of expertise in instrumental music, the ideal candidate possesses a wide understanding of a variety of areas of music education, including but not limited to winds, strings, jazz, piano, guitar, music theory, and music history. The Director of Instrumental Music must have professional experience as a musician with a recognized record of achievement. In addition, applicants should have experience as a music instructor or conductor with a knowledge of current trends in their field.
