Position Summary
We seek to expand the team with the addition of an Instructor for Peer Support Specialist training programs. In this pivotal role, you will positively impact the lives of scholars within the healthcare workforce and their eventual patients. As an online Instructor, you will guide scholars through the soft skills learning experience via video calls, respond thoughtfully and timely to posts in Canvas, sense and respond to individual and group needs, and model best practices as an Instructor. Peer Support Specialists provide peer-to-peer support and promote recovery for individuals facing mental health challenges or substance use disorders, leveraging their lived experiences to inspire hope, assist with navigating the healthcare system, and empower clients on their journey to wellness and stability.
Essential Job Functions
Facilitate synchronous and asynchronous instruction modules, including reviewing and responding to discussion posts
Coordinate the process and orientation for onboarding students into the Learning Management System
Communicate regularly with participants about their progress and upcoming course activities, responding to scholars within 24-48 hours
Track participation in the Canvas course system and provide regular reporting on outcomes
Participate in debriefing calls with the facilitation team
Facilitate multiple 1-hour live sessions using a conferencing tool in Canvas
Allocate 2 hours per week for prep and grading
Enforce academic policies and code of conduct
Provide real-time feedback to students and remediate as needed
Complete all grading within specified timeframes
Notify the Senior Program Manager of Direct Care Services and Jumpstart Pathways of students at risk and those who fail courses
Interact with students professionally, offering constructive, encouraging, and timely feedback
Conduct weekly "live" video discussions as needed
Continuously improve the effectiveness of the student journey, workflows, automated nudges/scripts/FAQs, academic policies, and operational procedures
Develop and implement student retention and completion strategies
Collaborate with other divisions to facilitate recruitment towards numerical goals and qualifications
Provide direction on next steps for certification exams
Conduct certification exam reviews
Develop contingencies for enrollment as needed
Schedule course offerings in accordance with recruitment flow
Qualifications
Bilingual (preferred)
Prior Teaching Experience (preferred)
Ability to learn or experience facilitating a course using an LMS like Canvas (preferred)
Effective facilitation skills demonstrated in a 10-minute teaching demo
Background in allied health
Self-identified experience with the recovery process from mental illness or substance use disorder, either as a consumer or as a family member
Minimum of 1 year in the mental health industry or 3 years' experience as a peer support specialist
Ability to monitor and recommend improved program outcomes
Good interpersonal skills to relate, establish, and cultivate respectful relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
Working knowledge of collaboration tools including Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, Zoom or Teams, and databases. Ability to learn new software as required.
Education
Must hold a current certification as a Peer Support Specialist in California and have proficiency in English (Spanish is a plus)
Training as a peer support specialist, community health worker, or relevant field of study or equivalent related work experience
An associate degree or certification/license in allied health is desirable
Work Environment/Travel
This is a remote role with travel required to attend meetings and conferences.
Supervisory Responsibility
This role does not have supervisory responsibility over other staff.
Physical Demands
The capacity to lift 25 pounds is required
Ability to drive, sit, stand, and walk for long periods
Ability to work irregular hours, including after hours and weekends, although infrequent
Position Type
Part-time, 24 hours per week, which may include weekends, nights, and holidays.
