The Instructional Designer for the College of Education and Human Ecology Distance Education and Learning Design (DELD) team provides expertise and guidance in the development and support of online, hybrid, and in-person courses. This involves collaborating with departmental leadership, faculty, and staff on all aspects of the development of high-quality distance education courses, modules, and curricula that incorporate best practices in course design, pedagogy, educational technology use, and accessibility. The Instructional Designer performs job duties with a high level of autonomy and proficiency in work and resource prioritization. Major duties include partnering with faculty and subject-matter experts to identify curricular, design, and professional development needs in support of strategic goals; taking initiative with department and program areas to identify and pursue distance education strategic goals; managing instructional design projects to successful completion; training and assisting instructors to develop distance education courses and modules using university-approved tools such as Canvas. Key responsibilities of the instructional designer include: Work with instructors to design or redesign courses for online, hybrid, and face-to-face delivery; consult on course development plans including assistance in the alignment of learning objectives to course assessments and effective learning activities and materials; Assists in the development of activities and structure of courses within learning management systems; Provides support, guidance, and workshops to instructors utilizing Canvas learning management system and other learning technologies; Designs and delivers workshops and consultations in support of effective teaching, course design, adoption and use of university-wide initiatives and tools, integrating technology tools, and more as needed; Conducts quality assurance reviews using research-based practices and standards; Assists and trains instructors in the creation of multimedia for learning including, but not limited to, narrated presentations, screencasts, animated GIFs, data visualization, info-graphics, course graphics, and explainer and animation video; Networks and engages with other EHE departments and staff, university groups and initiatives, and outside professional organizations to improve the course design process, discover and evaluate new technologies, and build strategic partnerships.

  • (70%) Develops and executes instructional design, content design, programming, and technical work necessary in meeting high-level college initiatives and distance education goals. Ensures that course designs meet recognized quality standards for increase learner engagement, satisfaction, achievement, and accessibility. Improves the course development process and learning management system experience. Leads instructional design projects to successful conclusion. Initiates and leads strategic departmental distance education initiatives with identified departmental leaders. Collaborates with department leaders on strategic distance education initiatives for dedicated department within the college. Partners with faculty and subject-matter experts to identify curricular needs, design needs, and collaborates in the development of online courses and programs. Collaborate with Distance Education and Learning Design (DELD) team to meet consistent design standards, assist in development, and extend possibilities in courses with multimedia and interactive learning opportunities. Identify, recommend, and support of multimedia, software, educational technology, and strategies in course design and facilitation. Conducts quality assurance reviews using research-based practices and standards that help guide, inform, and influence course development and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of course design and instruction.
  • (20%) Plans and develops supplemental training and educational material that helps provide additional interaction and engagement for academic and non-academic course use, including but not limited to educational technologies, interactive video, drag-and-drop interactions, timelines, hotspot images, and learning games. Designs and delivers programming (workshops, consultations, newsletters, tutorials, etc.) in support of effective teaching, course design, adoption and use of LMS, integrating technology tools, and more. Act as lead on one or more programming initiatives with Distance Education and Learning Design (DELD) team.
  • (5%) Maintains proficiency with instructional design models, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines, foundational educational theory and instructional strategies, and emerging educational technologies. Networks and engages with other EHE departments and staff, university groups and initiatives, and outside professional organizations to improve the course design process, discover and evaluate new technologies, and build strategic partnerships. May supervise the activity, training, and development of student employees in support of Instructional Design.
  • (5%) Other Duties as Assigned.

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's Level Degree with a major in Education or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Education Desired: Master's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in education

Qualifications

Required Experience: Sound knowledge of foundational learning theories, principles and best practices, technology integration standards, and instructional design models for online, blended, and face-to-face courses. Minimum of 4 years combined relevant experience in instructional design, online course development, teaching and/or instruction; preferably in a higher education context. Experience managing production processes for curriculum and instruction projects. Minimum 2 years of experience utilizing a learning management system (LMS), such as Canvas. Knowledge of quality assurance mechanisms in course design (Quality Matters). Demonstrated knowledge of learning technologies and their effective application in course design. Knowledge of universal design for learning, WCAG accessibility standards, and basic HTML, CSS, and web design principles. Experience and competence managing multiple projects, balancing competing priorities and deadlines, and leading diverse teams. Highly collaborative and team-orientated track record. Ability to effectively communicate with subject matter experts and other stakeholders.

Desired Experience: Master's degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, education, learning technologies, educational technology or equivalent education and experience. 4-6 years of experience with online teaching or creating courses with Canvas LMS. An understanding of the practical application of course design principles and methods; application of quality assurance mechanisms in course design. Experience supporting online education & technology enhanced teaching. Experience using and training others to use innovative technological tools to enhance teaching. Experience working effectively, independently and as part of team.

Additional Information

The Targeted Hiring Range for this position is $58,100 to $77,200
