The State Historical Society of Iowa has been a trustee of Iowa’s historical legacy since 1857. With a dual mission of preservation and education, it maintains a museum, two research centers, and seven historic sites. The society preserves and provides access to Iowa’s historical resources through a variety of statewide programs, exhibitions and projects while serving as an advocate for Iowa’s past and connector to the future.

Job Description:

The State Historical Society of Iowa is looking for an Information Desk Ambassador, to report to the Community Engagement Manager. The Information Desk Ambassador must work from the State Historical Building in Des Moines at least two days per week during public hours, which are currently Tuesday through Friday, 9 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. and Saturdays 9 A.M. – 3 P.M.

This position will provide customer service to museum visitors and event attendees, direct phone calls, help set up tables and chairs for events and support State Historical Society of Iowa staff with various projects as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience working with arts, cultural or humanities institution. History.iowa.gov

Description Of Work:

  • Welcome and check-in visitors using an iPad. Explain building layout and answer questions on museum exhibit navigation.
  • Answer phone calls and make transfers to appropriate team members. Return voicemails as requested.
  • Assist with event set up of tables, chairs and basic A/V equipment.
  • Assist with projects such as mailings, cataloging collections items, and other projects as assigned.

  • Maintain a positive, attentive attitude when interacting with co-workers and the public.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills via phone and email.
  • Proficiently enter and update information with minimal supervision.
  • Proactively organize work, take care of details, and adhere to a routine to keep pace and comply with all requirements, at the agency, state and federal levels.

This is a non-merit temporary position with the Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS). Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
